Got a spanner? Then we’ve got the worx!
I'm looking for game developers/artists/musicians to join me at Spannerworx, a humble new game development team. Ever thought about joining a team, or how good it would be to get a constant stream of help/support/feedback in order to complete your project?
I have, and I’m looking for people like me
The plan is to start off by making games for the gaming community, small or large, and for free (yes, no pay cheques here I’m afraid). Perhaps after making a name for ourselves, depending on how we progress, we can start looking at the commercial market. Nevertheless, I have realised that by combining forces with other like-minded people, we can progress far quicker and with far more polished results.
I am initially hoping for around another two or three C++ / OpenGL programmers, an artist, maybe a modeller and hopefully a musician. I can provide the web site area and content, but if anyone wants to help with this then bonus. If you only have limited experience in hobbyist game development, but you still want to join a team, then still apply – all I ask is that you have imagination, creativity and a decent sense of humour
I have good programming skills in many languages, most notably Java, Cold Fusion and mainly other web-oriented languages (javascript, Perl, PHP etc.), as my career is in the web market. Game programming is only a hobby of mine - I started developing in OpenGL roughly about a year ago, but I've picked it up fast. I've had to teach myself C/C++ and other applications, like 3D Studio Max in order to progress with my quest to make games. Therefore I'm still only a game developer beginner, but I have a long held passion for games, so my knowledge and skill will increase swiftly (I hope). I also have good skills with image manipulation programs like Adobe Photoshop, and I’ve made my own sound effects and songs.
I’m a dedicated worker, and would expect team members to be so too. However, I wouldn’t want to loose the element of fun that goes along with game development so please bear in mind that this will not be a dictatorship - all game related ideas and suggestions will be treated equally by all team members.
I have a few ideas for projects that we could begin on…perhaps I should just say that I’m not too keen on trying to develop any RPG’s (they are too big, would take too long and too many people are making them anyway)…sorry.
If you are at all interested, please mail me or drop me a line here. Below is a link to some screenshots of a small game I am currently working on, in case you want to get an idea of what I can do, bearing in mind I’m a beginner.
Thanks for your time.

Hi,
I might be interested in doing it.
I''m a student studying Electronic Eng, but have been programming C/C++ for 2 years.
In the past 2 weeks I have been beasting OpenGL and have built a simple game engine, with moveable camera, collision detection and mouse look, running on DirectInput. Actually that doesn''t sound much but if you are still looking for people to work with and want to have a look, I''d be more than prepared to forward the source.

Yeah, that sounds great Micheal.
I''m not looking for experts or gurus here, I just want to form a little team of people of roughly the same level. That way we can learn together, faster than we would alone...and hopefully have something good at the end of the day.

Thanks for your interest, berserk.
By all means, if you could show/describe to me what your engine can do, or at least what experiance and skills you have, then we can discuss it.
Although saying that, if you are only prepared to limit yourself to real-time strategy games, then this team might not be for you. Personally I really like RTS games and wouldnt mind attempting to develop one, however, the chosen game genre and engine is something that the whole team will decide upon once the team itself is significantly established.

I'm using this engine: http://www.powerrender.com/powerrender/index.htm
And I do limit myself to only RTS games. However, I am open about the actual design of the RTS.
I have experience working with that engine, win32 API, and OOP in C++. I also have experience writing good design documents. I believe in the idea that the guy doing most of the work essentially controls the project.

Hello all,
Thanks very much for all the feedback: your suggestions on starting a community based team such as Spannerworx and also the people who have applied to join.
If any other people are still interested, drop me a line telling me a little about what you have done and what you hope to achieve by joining a team. It seems most people like to contact me via email rather than post on the forum, which is understandable. Any more suggestions/problems people have encountered starting up a new team are also greatly appreciated.
Could I also remind you that the main point of starting up this team is to create that golden and most elusive emotion – motivation. It can be difficult to complete projects when you work alone, because your motivation goes when you don’t have a team behind you. That’s what I believe anyway. I also want to stress the fact that all team members are exactly that – team members. The leader of the team is the person who will maintain order, and make that ultimate decision when after a debate, the team is still split down the middle. I will be the team leader of this specific team, but as far as my privileges go, that’s about it. This is not a career. It’s not the job that you hate to do, but do it anyway because you get paid. This is fun. It’s all about getting together and making games. And one day we may reap financial rewards, but that’s down to fate and how well we progress.
Berserk:
That’s a fair proposal. I believe that if for some reason a person finds themselves putting in more work than any other, then naturally they will have more control. This stands to reason, because they understand the code better than any other since they coded it, and therefore has a better idea of how the other work can be divided and how it will fit in. I must say that the engine you recommended does look extremely impressive. With regards to you limiting yourself to RTS games, I’m afraid that it’s impossible to say whether this will be worth your while. Spannerworx is not yet at a significant stage of formation to communally decide on the projects genre.

My name is Chris, I''m 14 years old, and I have programmed in c+ and directx for 3 years. I am completely confident with my c++ and directx coding, but since your coding in opengl, my directx knowledge is pretty much void. I am just now learning opengl and could help on an engine for your project.
My knowledge of OpenGL so far:
Rendering basic shapes 2d and 3d.
.bmp, .tga, .jpg(.jpeg) loaders and some basic texture mapping.
I can create lights and do some per-pixel lighting on shapes.
load .md2, .md3, and .3ds files.
and still progressing daily...
I am willing to devote time to whatever is needed, because I have a lot of time to give outside of basketball practice and school.

Hi
I''ve been working with OpenGL for awhile now. My current project is a terrain engine based on b-spline surfaces. Here''s a test of the LOD I recently compiled:
http://www.alientrap.com/neproxource/terrain_LOD.zip
Right now I''m working on the physics part of it... so progress is halted while I study up.
Lemme know if I can help
