[java] GUI issues

Original Post
I have a number of questions about how users like their GUIs. Would they prefer:
1) Native look and feel over the default Metal look and feel that Swing provides? My program is going to run on multiple platforms, so would users normally prefer a single uniform interface, or for a native style interface?
2) standard Windows icons over custom icons?
3) (slight tangent) Has anyone got the Windows XP look and feel in Java yet?
if you use the windows style one on winxp then this would be in that style would it not? just like mac buttons look like mac buttons. I could be wrong.

No, that doesn''t happen. OS X has a modified version of the Java runtime, and Apple had written an ''OS X look and feel'' for Java, hence you get the nice buttons
This was the least of my problems, but I''m glad someone was interested
I think it really depends on the type of program you are writing. But IMHO I generally would
1) Go for the uniform instead of native. If your program is a good one then that will help distinguish it from other proggies.
2)Custom icons, since it will be on multiple platforms.
3) ^_^ not a clue. Atleast I have never tried.
Well that would be my opinion and you know what they same about opinions...

I''m of the opinion that it really shouldn''t matter what the look and feel is but overall users like to have a consistent interface. If its not too much trouble, you could have a menu option that allows them to switch the look and feel. Then your users will feel empowered.
You''d have to go with custom icons if its cross platform.

[NOISE] BigB : 50% of people aren''t always below average. For instance, having 1,2,3,4 and 10 has an average of 4, so 80% of people in this example would be below average ;-)
Yes, but when you consider a sample size of 6 billion people, you get a fairly even distribution. It also doesn''t say what they are below average in (your mind fills in that part).
