DX9 SDK problem

After installing the DX9 SDK and trying to run any Direct3d sample application (such as DolphinVS, Billboard, etc.) I get the error: "This application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I tried reinstalling, uninstalling and redownloading, etc. Same problem. Any idea what's happening and how to fix it? I have had no problems compiling or running DX8.1 applications. The system is very vanilla: just Windows XP (home), Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, and a few simple apps. I guess you have installed the DirectX 9 SDK only. But you have to install the DirectX 9 runtimes as well.

I got the same problem. In my case it was caused by DX8.1 SDK not being uninstalled (despite I clearly uninstalled it). When you uninstall DX8.1 SDK, make sure it is uninstalled by rebooting and looking in the ''installed progs'' if it''s really gone.

Also, DX9 installer is crimpled with bugs, it is possible that for some reason, the runtimes are not installed. Here, whatever I do, I can''t get the freaking C# samples to install. I downloaded Full SDK twice to make sure.

In any case, I highly recommend you to make a system restore since a bad DX installation WILL get you into deep trouble.
