Okay, so not even asking for one, my parents got me a DVD player for Christmas (and I am quite happy about that, thank you very much). Anyway, in addition to this, I also have some money to burn, and so I''m going to go out tomorrow and get some more DVDs so I actually have something to watch. Therein lies the problem. Now, I''ve got some ideas of what to get, but what are your suggestions? So far, I''m leaning very heavily towards getting the 5-disc FotR set, but that''s like $50. Of course, since I got money for nothing, I can handle that But what else should I get?

The Matrix, if nothing else then just for the lobby scene.
Army of Darkness (the Bootleg thingy version), best commentary i''ve ever heard. Almost as entertaining as the movie itself.
O Brother Where Art Thou, good music
And of course, FoTR.

That''s basically my DVD collection, so if you want to be cool like me, those''re the DVDs you need.

UHF. Seriously. I loved it.
And Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.
Both are funny. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is a childhood favorite of mine.

Shrek? Ice Age? Any of the Pixar movies?
I don't own many movies so maybe I am not the best to ask...

Mr Show is funny.
Does Mr Bean come on DVD sets?
Any Mel Brooks movies.

Is there Pirates of Silicon Valley available?
Hackers, Swordfish, Antitrust, Office Space, other tech/geek movies where the Movie OS is running on the computers.

Star Trek episodes?

Last I checked (a few months ago) Pirates of Silicon Valley was only on VHS, no DVD. Lets all demand that TNT release it on DVD!

Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition (it is only four discs, not 5, and can be had for around $40) - best DVD ever made

Star Wars Episode I or II - well made, great visuals and sound

The Matrix - the original "Wow, look what DVD can do" DVD

Wizard of Oz - ''nuff said

There are tons of well made DVD''s (Memento, Fight Club, Se7en, all of Kevin Smith''s movies) and many more bad DVD''s (with poor transfer, and little to no special features).

After those biggies, get the movies you like. Like the VCR, the whole point of the DVD player is to be able to watch the movies you want, in the comfort of your home (albeit with sharper visuals, clearer sounds, and hopefully a bunch of extra goodies).

Speaking of The Matrix, is it just me or is the picture looking a little compressed? Pixelated with those little color bands (what are those called?) and stuff. It''d be really awesome if they released a new Special Edition The Matrix DVD with a retransfered picture and new DTS 6.1 sound! Ooooooohhh.. that''d be nice.

-Fight Club
-Army of Darkness (yes, the "bootleg" one!)
-Mortal Kombat (great movie, watch it for the fighting. Dont bother on the sequel though, that one is TOO bad)
-Office Space
-Pi (a great movie, very interesting)
-Requiem For A Dream (made by same guy who made Pi. Very sad, but very very interesting)
-Twelve Monkeys (It''s just cool)

hmmmm.....

That''s most of the DVD''s I own

Yeah, I noticed that with my copy of the Matrix too... Especially in the "green code" scenes. But it''s still a great DVD. I also have "The Matrix Revisited". Nifty stuff.

BUY EVANGELION! hehe...

My (tiny) DVD Collection:

The Matrix
The Matrix Revisted
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Metropolis

DVDs I Need:

Army Of Darkness (If you haven''t seen this, think "Bastard child of Evil Dead and Holy Grail).
FoTR 4 disc set (My dad has it...I wonder, if I steal it, if he''ll notice? nahhh...)
Perfect Collection Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop Movie
Band Of Brothers set...

Ahh....but money...

Alas, Tomorrow I shall have none, as I will be purchasing some computer games... Max Payne was fun, until the seventh time around.

Get M.P. & The Holy Grail *Special Edition* (don''t get the first DVD edition, it''s crap). Tons of extras, like the search for the holy grail locations, holy grail in Japanese with English subtitles (there are a bunch of subtitle tracks, including subtitles for those who don''t like MP&THG).

Subscribe to netflix. For the price of one DVD a month, you can rent like 10 DVDs. Pretty good selection too.

Actually, the FoTR 4 disc set, has a 5th DVD produced by National Geographic, a documentary on tolkien, and the making of the movie and such things.

Actually, that is the Collector''s Edition, which also comes with two bookends, nice packaging, and some trading cards. But it runs around $70 (compared with $40 for the regular Extended Edition). Not really worth it, methinks, even for big movie/book fans (like I am).

Actually, I was already aware of netflix. However, I think I''m going to wait until next year, when I can probably get my roommate to go in on it with me.

Oh, and you can get more than 10 a month. You can get as many as you want, but you can only have 3 at a time

Still, it''s a great deal considering that even if you only get one movie each weekend, that''s about the same cost as driving to Blockbuster every weekend for a movie, minus the hassle of driving there, the cost of gas, waiting in line, maybe not getting what you want, etc.
