Me and my buddy want to play Counter-Strike via LAN. I have the two computers set up for the networking, over the ethernet adapters. The computers are 5 feet apart. Do I need a hub or switcher or router for this to work, or can they be directly connected. On another note, the older computer (running windows 98) is on a HPNA (Home Phone Network ??) network, so it has DSL access. Can the other computer (running XP -- eek) share the internet connection??

You could use a hub, switch, or router if you liked. However, you can link them directly using an ethernet crossover cable. As for the HPNA, I'm not too sure. It might be possible, but I'm not familiar with that variety of network.

Head over to Practically Networked for some excellent guides to get you started.

EDIT: I can't spell.
