I just finished reading "Zen of Direct 3D Gme Programming" and I understand and can use like 95% of what it said (with a little help, of course) and I was wondering if I should write my own engine, or use the Zen engine? I''m still by all means a newbie, and I don''t know if I should spend time making my own engine, or if I should use that engine and focus on the content and design of making a game. Thanks. I''d decide based on what you''re most interested in-content or engine, but if you code your own engine, you get a feeling of satisfaction and are not tied to other people''s proprietary code.

I too just got started with DirectX, and, although I''ve been programming with C++ and MFC for a while, DX is different in many respects. To get started, I bought a book called Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus , which covers a great deal of material relating to games, and which also comes with its own engine.

Now, I''m not saying that the engine is bad--it isn''t--but it''s created for DirectDraw, and I wanted to see how to work with 2d games using Direct3d. As my skills really aren''t that proficient yet, I went looking for a good engine that I could use to get started on making my own games. That''s when I ran into an interesting site on Sourceforge.net that had a free, open-source 2d engine available.

So far I''ve been experimenting with the engine, and right now I''m in the process of creating a Tetris game. (If I could only figure out how to monitor all the pieces in the playing field correctly!) At first the engine itself was a little complicated, but once I studied it more I got the hang of it. I highly recommend you take a look at it at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxframework/. Best of luck to you in your programming endeavors!

Hmmm... Well, since I don''t have to have a demo ready in 3 months to use to get a job, I''ll start using the Zen engine and maybe some of another one for scripting, then after I finish a game I''ll write my own. I''m not worried about time right now because I still have 2 years of high school left, then college, so I have plenty of time.

Most book-tutorial engines are limited in the fact that they aren''t made flexible enough for personal projects. If you want to do something other than what the tutorials were meant to teach you to do, it requires either extensive modification, or a totally new engine anyway.
Write your own. It''s therapeutic.

You''re right... I just tried to start on something today, and I was following the example on how to load and display .x files, and it wouldn''t work. It displayed what looked like a super close up of the image, no matter what I set the position to. I tried changing everything I could find, but it didn''t work. After that I just decided to let the Zen engine go and make my own for D3D9.

I was holding 60 fps when it showed the messed up image,
