Component Failure :(

I''ve been building my own comp for the past few days, and it has been a nightmare. I''ve built machines before and never with so much trouble. First thing that happened was I got all my components from the store, assembled the machine, was 100% sure all the connections were right. Plug everything in, hit the power button, and ... absolutely nothing. Just sits there. After a lot of messing around including taking a power supply from another comp and plugging it into my new components (and getting everything working) I decided that the power supply I had gotten (a cheap generic one) was bad. Trade in the power supply at the store (they were real nice about it) and get my comp working. Installed Windows 2000, and began to install other software when all of a sudden I restart and bam! C:\WINNT\boot.ini is missing or corrupted. Well crap. So I attempt a repair installation, which doesn''t work, even though in the boot.ini missing error message that''s what it says to do! So I repartition and attempt to reformat the drive, and now it hangs at 12%, then gives me the error "Cannot write FAT, Format terminated." I run all these special Maxtor (the brand of my HDD) formatting utilities on my hard drive, and they all hang at the exact same spot, after having to wade through megs of bad clusters. So I decided to attempt a low-level format. I get a low-level formatter from Maxtor''s site, but it can''t find my HDD! My BIOS sees the HDD, and when I use an old Win98 boot disk it sees the HDD, but the low-level formatter doesn''t! Now, right after I try to do a (failed) format, my BIOS won''t recognize that my hard drive exists until I shut down, and unplug and then plug back in the power cable. I mean, WTF is with that? Well anyways, I am going to return the HDD tomorrow, and hope they don''t get too concerned that I keep coming back with failed components. LOL, I can just imagine them asking me questions like, "Are you sure the IDE cable is in upside down?" *Sigh*, oh well, just wanted to vent, and since we are all geeks here I figured I would ask you if any of you have had tons of problems with newly purchased hardware in the past, or whether for some reason I have angered the component failure gods or something. And is there any chance my hard drive isn''t severely fubarred and there is a way to fix it?

Don''t feel bad about it, I once put a computer together and there was nothing on the screen when computer was running, I figured it''s because the graphocs card is not plugged in properly, so I just pushed it in while the computer was running.
Fried the mother board and the graphics card :|.. I guess you shouldn''t hot swap AGP

One night I came home and smelled a very potent ''burnt'' odor in my room. After searching around with my nose for a while, I smelled my computer''s power supply fan. BAM, that was where it came from.

So I took the power supply out and opened it up to see how much had gotten fried. The interior of the thing was COMPLETELY black. I was so glad it didn''t fry anything else.

So yea, I think we''ve all had our computer problems

I had a macintosh that lit on fire once (Quite literally, the flames where a few inches off the mobo)

I would call that more of a solution than a problem

I managed to set a comp aflame a few years back... we were messing around with various cables and a power wire must have somehow gotten itself lost to the cdrom audio out.... (that´s what you get with three pairs of hands playing around in one case). The result was a strong odor, then smoke and then flames ("Turn it off, turn it off!"). Funny enough all we had to do was reconnect the wires and redo the insulation.

I once poored some pepsi in my keyboard. It caused a shortcircuit and fried my mobo keyboard port! WTF! The last time I saw a movie with a poor guy pooring coke in it's KB, the computer suddenly became super intelligent. I can't remember the name of this movie. Surely, it didn't happen with mine, but I still drink all kind of things over my KB. I will probably never learn.

Last year, I started my computer after being away for a few weeks then... BANG! and I really mean it... it made a loud noise... and I got smoke coming out my computer. You can't imagine how I was feeling!!! My girlfriend was very happy however. Hopefully, only the power supply fried and everything else was intact!

From now on, I only use Enermax power supplies. It's a few more dollars but you get a very good surge protection and an ultra-quiet fan.

Not so ammusing like some posts...
I had an old (AMD K6, 400MHz) pooter in my room until the mobo got fried with a power surge (so did my mobile phone that was sitting in the charger :s). The pooter just shut itself down. "Thats strange" i think, so i power it up again. It gets to the POST, and does a long beep followed by a short one. I power it off, and go hunting for what that means on the Internet (why can't they have one standard for POST beep codes?!?). An hour later and i still can't find out what type of mobo it is (its really old), let alone what the beeps mean. So, power it up again. This time it passes the POST, and gets halfway through running scandisk before it encounters a "Windows Protection Fault". Reboot again. This time it hangs at the video card BIOS screen. Reboot. CPU & PSU fans go on. Thats it. Try again. Nothing. Swap video card. Nothing. Remove video card. Nothing. Remove everything except the mobo. Nothing. Bugger. Off to the shop (Silicon Computers if anyones interested) "New motherboard and CPU please" (because they don't have any old mobos). "Need a heatsink & fan?" "Bugger, yeah". £98 later, get home and find that the smalles mobo they had is still to big for my case. Of course the shops shut now. Get up the next day, go and get a new case and PSU - £30. Come home, put it all together, press the power button... Nothing. Not even any fans. Check the back. D'oh! its not plugged in. Plug it in and press the power button. Still nothing. Wiggle all the cables. Still nothing. Plug the PSU into my other pooter. Woo hoo! The PSU works. Hang on a minute, that means the mobos duffed. Ahhhh! Start up my other pooter. It starts up windows, executes autoexec.bat, and then comes up with the command prompt. I sit there for about 10 mins before realising its doing nothing. I press enter. Its in DOS. type "cd windows" then "win". Starting windows 98... Blue screen of death "VFAT has not been initialised. Blah blah blah." Restart. Same thing in safe mode. *sigh* "format c:".... "I:\setup". Get windows installed, then find i've lost Apache, all my web site, and forum messages (although i still have the code). Ahhhhhhh!!! Ok, install drivers. Video, Modem, Network, Sound. Where did i put my sound card drivers. Bugger. Its not my day. Goto soundblaster.com to download drivers, but i can't remember what card it is. *sigh* Open pooter, look at card - nothing on it but a sticker saying "Creative CT4810". Uh hu... Off to google, try to find out what that means. No joy. Ok, i think its an AWE32. Install those drivers. Nope, nothing. Ok, jsut plain "Soundblaster". Nothing. Soddit. Go out and get pissed. Next morning, take mobo back. Its Sunday, but the shops still open *phew*. "I got this yesterday and its duff, can i have another please?" (paraphrasing ). They won't replace it without testing it first, and its Sunday, so the technical department is shut. So i'll be going again tomorrow then. And i still cant find my sound card drivers. Its all so quiet...

Sorry, thats more gibbering than is healthy in one sitting. More sentances too.

Last time I poured cranberry juice on my keyboard, nothing happened!
