Programming a painting program

After making some raytracers with SDL, I''d like to make something useful: a painting program. But, what API (if any) do painting programs like PSP or PhotoShop use? They can draw pixels, you can scroll in it really fast, they can do this in many windows etc... What do they use, and can this be done in DevC++? And yes this has to do with game development because you can for example make textures with a painting program

They use win32 api AFAIK...i wonder how an opengl accelerated windows-paint would look

look into SetDiBits for fast pixel plotting, thats about everything you need, since all operations should be done in a color buffer which then gets loaded to a memory dc with the setdibits, and from there blitted onto a visible dc

I suspect they use win32 stuff like DIB sections and so forth. I''ve never got this to work satisfactorily (sp?) and any tutorials I''ve found have been woefully lacking. If anyones got some links I''d find that useful too.

I thought about doing a paint program where you worked on (textured) 3D quads, you could drag them around and position paint tools in 3D space to paint the image. I doubt it would be useful beyond novelty value though

Yes, are there tutorials on this please?
I searched google but didn't find useful docs.

[EDIT] I just found this, now I'm learning myself some "boring" Winapi programming
