i posted a thread in another forum with this question (among others) but this particular question isnt getting any responses so i figured itd be better placed here. anyway, im working on a 3d worldmap (ala ff7) made up heightmaps and id like to simulate times of the day.. noon and afternoon are no problem i just change the color of the sky and the two times look distinguishable.. but im stuck on how to do night. i was first thinking of rendering a dark blue, semi-transparent quad across the entire screen, but that will just make everything harder to see, it wont change everything to a nice blue hue, etc. has anyoen ever done this that can help me? what are some things i can do to make the world look like it''s really night out?

Change the global ambient lighting to a blue colour.
Reduce all ambient lighting in the scene to (almost) nothing.

That''s really all you need, I find. Make it dark, and make any lights really stand out.
