hello, a couple friends and myself are planning on developing a game. i''ve created a couple games before, one using my own engine and one using a pre-existing engine. for this project we''re going to use a pre-existing engine, and we''ve come here for some recommendations. i know most 3d engines that are available and what terms they may be used under, however, i''d like your input as to which may be best suited for our game. below is a list of some things we''ll need: we''ll be using the engine from c++ bsp loading/rendering dynamic lighting DirectX preferred (as this is the API I know), but it doesn''t really matter common model formats (maybe .md2 and/or .md3, .3ds, etc) sound engine input engine as fast as possible as clean/simple an interface as possible as *cheap* as possible (we''re willing to spend some money, but only if it''s absolutely necessary) the game is going to be a 3rd person espionage/stealth game (in the same genre as Splinter Cell and MGS 2). the engines i''ve found that i believe are best suited for us are the Auran Jet engine and the Power Render engine. if you have any comments on either one, or some feedback/recommendations, please let me know. thanks!

Try the Torque Game Engine from Garage Games (www.garagegames.com).

It covers all your needs, and costs just $100US (per developer). I recently paid for a copy just to see what it can do and I''m very impressed, the support from the community will be invaluable too.

i''ve looked at the Torque Engine a couple times and was very impressed (especially the Realm Wars game!), but i''ve never really seen any sample code using the engine. is it setup well?

Yes it is set up very, very well. You just have to adjust to it''s style, since the majority of your development will be done in scripts. You can get the free Tribal IDE which provides syntax highlighted editing and project managment (like msvc workspaces) and debug output. Have a good look around the garage games forums- perhaps even consider paying the price and buying it now to evaluate it seriously.

At $100 you can''t go wrong. I bought the Torque engine over christmas, even though my current game is a 2D turn-based space strategy game. My logic, to have a proven 3D game engine to use as reference, when learning 3D model and world manipulation, and to use their game logic scripting language for other things. I figure even if I don''t use the engine, the ability to look at someone else''s code that works, and either adopt their good ideas, or simply avoid some mistakes I''d have otherwise made, makes it easily worth the $100 - especially since I use heavily C++ styles code (LOTS of templates, polymorphism, etc). Combine this with other freely available code - OGRE, Quake ... and you can get up to speed in no time.

Personally I feel that when tying to just USE an exisiting engine (not extend) than Torque looks like the best thing for it ... I''ll post more once I gain some experience playing with it ...
