Weell as you may be aware of the quake2 source code was released a while back. Now this strikes me as a good way to learn a bi of programming from the ''pros''. In this case we are looking to id software for answers, purveyors of high quality merchandise such as RTCW and Q1, 2 and "cough" 3. So looking at 2 its written in C and is covered in pointers and asembly and well, its possible but it would be easier if I knew just a little more than I do now.
I have a lot of questions regarding the massive amount of files before me in my Visual C++ 6 workspaces. If you have seen the code you''ll know there are 5 different workspaces within the main workspace called
ctf
game
quake2
ref_gl
ref_soft
Now this information is pretty useless if you don''t kow what I''m talking about but this is the problem I would like to compile this collection. Do I
a) switch to linux
b) find an answer on this forum from someone who has done what I am trying to do
c) program my own quake 2 world by buying a gun and running round the streets in a soldier costume and taking large amounts of acid
I haven''t compiled it yet (never wanted to) so I can''t help you there (but it doesn''t have to be done on Linux).
But I wouldn''t go looking to learn from the Quake 2 source, heh. I mean, it''s genius (in a twisted, C-style, Carmackian kinda way), but as everyone here will probably tell you, not many get away with loose coding styles like Carmack''s.
Yet I do agree, it is really fun to sift around and see how they do things, and it does give you some insight to how some professional engines do it.
Just don''t let the bad habits rub off.

Your right it does look pretty rough going howeer (as recommended to me by an agency) if I can modify this code I can get job, presumably as these are the sorts of styles I ( as a junior ) can expect to be faced with and not being able to do it my own way. i don''t need to compile it so much as to understand the basic compnents. What is the mystery behing the 5 workspaces so I can begin to look into one or t''other. Thanks.
Erm.. having only sifted through the source code once or twice and not being an owner of VC, I can''t go into details, but from the looks of the namespace names they''re: capture-the-flag (don''t remember q2 having it, but it might''ve been added later on), game pipeline - the part binding together all the other ones, q2 core engine, rendering in opengl and rendering in software, respectively. i suppose anyone interested how something works and not being a hardcore programmer/math-freak would stay away from the last one and have a thorough look at ''game'' or ''quake2'' first - that''s where the goodies lie, i bet...

Wicked answer my firend thanks I will go forth and search right away.
It is not too hard to get it to compile.
In the workspace there are 5 projects that compile to different .exe/.dll's.
ctf compiles to ctf/gamex86.dll (ctf game code)
game compiles to baseq2/gamex86.dll (quake2 game code)
quake2 compiles to quake2.exe (basic engine code)
ref_gl compiles to ref_gl.dll (opengl render code)
ref_soft compiles to ref_soft.dll (software render code)
These are the main components of quake2 besides the pak files and other stuff.
You can take an existing Quake2 install to test your files.
Select one active project at a time or use Batch Build to select multiple projects.
I removed it, but I remember all projects compiled fine the first time for me (VC6).
By the way, if you're still not getting it to run, go for option c
