Hi all, I am a long-time programmer who codes in C/C++ both as a job and a hobby. I have written some independant software(nothing AAA) and have sold my work to various businesses like travel agencies and doctors offices. It is my great pleasure to announce a major C++ specific portal/information site is opening up to the public very soon! I just signed a contract with a major microsoft consultant a few days ago, and work has already started on the site! This site is a strict informational site for the programming community and is 100% non-profit. All cost and fee''s i''ve invested myself, and have done this for all of you so we can have one major C++ resource site at our fingertips. This has been a long time dream of mine to start up, but it seems i''ve always been busy doing other things. With this new year i''ve decided it was time to put my dreams into action, and thus this site is being born. This new portal will have anything and everything that is C++. Discussion forums, articles, columns, polls, high-tech interactive tutorials, advanced source code submittal engine where not only can people log on and play games or test apps, but will be able to download the source code as well! I''m very excited to announce this as I know there are a lot of programmers out there that have been waiting for a site like this. This all-in-one information site will be up VERY soon(est. time to get core of site up 2-3 weeks), and I hope that everyone can benefit from such a site. As of now, we have a staff of 21 people(15 software engineers, 2 microsoft consultants, and 4 hobbiest programmers), but we are looking for more! We are in need of the following people: 1) Article writers - On top of the over 4500 resources this site is already contracting out, we would like to get many site-original articles up there as well. These articles can be anything you can dream of as long as they are C++ related in some way. You may write on recent advancements in technology, mathmatical algorithms for pathfinding, tricks of the trade, up and comming software development businesses(no advertisements allowed on this site..ever), anything you want as long as it has something directly to do with C++ and can benefit other C++ programmers. 2) Forum Moderators - I have not yet even started to fill these spots, but we are in need of moderators who are experts in the specific field that the board you''d moderate covers. We have basic C++, advanced C++, DirectX, OpenGL, Math/Physics, along with a few other relevant boards. If you are interested in being a moderator who not only is willing to "patrol" the board to keep unwanted messages out, but has the expertise to answer questions on that board, please contact me. 3) software developers - If you have original content(games or applications) that you would not mind submitting, we''d love to post your work. There are a few guidelines for this: A) program must be written mostly in C++ B) you must have a finished product(tested, debugged, and stable) C) you must supply not only the application/game, but the source code and all pertinant files for the game to compile and run 100%. D) It would be nice if you would supply all this at no charge. You will have a personal bio set up for you with any content you wish within it. We will have the ability to set it up so that if you dont mind people trying out the application/game for free(this is non-negotiable, it must be free), but do not want people downloading the source code w/out some kind of charge we can set this up for you. Remember that this site is completely non-profit so anything you ask to charge will be the only charge for the source code. We will have the ability to set it up so you are automatically paid the moment people download the source too. That''s a brief picture of what we are setting up here! I am really excited to announce this, and I hope there is as good a reaction to the site as there has been. If you are interested in helping me, and would like to contact me ahead of time(a good idea since we already are at 21 people), feel free to write me at: d_s_johnson@hotmail.com. As to the sites name, I am holding this back for legal reasons for now(plus the fact that nothing is there), but I will come here and announce it the moment the core is up(I''m told 7-14 days, but i''m planning on 2-3 weeks). Thanks for taking the time to read this, and if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me as well. Dan Johnson

What will you be doing to ensure your site is a source of authoritative and quality information?

Hi sabreman,

I understand your concern that the information not only be correct on the site in a formal, easy-to-use fasion, but is backed up by experts in the field. I also have this concern which is why I have gone to great lengths to get top-notch professionals.

A few of these engineers i''ve mentions have been in the business for over 20 years, and one has written and published books on these topics.

This first post was only to inform people that a site like this is being built, and that I am looking for additional support for this site(positions listed above). I will post again when the site is up and operational and of course you can review it at any time...after all this site is for you.

If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to e-mail me at d_s_johnson@hotmail.com. Thanks for showing concern/interest. Any input will always be welcome.

Notice that he joined just the day he decided to spam the forum? He doesn''t provide a URL so we can preview the interface, either.

Which major microsoft consultant?

A hotmail address. How professional.

Not to be a jerk, but it all sounds pretty flaky/vapourwareish to me.

Show it to me when it''s done, and I''ll believe it.

The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

Hi skjinedmjeet,

As far as I knew, the definition of "spam" as its called is to repeat the same information over and over and over again, or to repeatedly receive the same type of information(IE porn-spam e-mails). I believe I have done neither of the two.

As to your other statement, yes I did just join today, and I did this so I could announce that I was looking for other people to assist me with this site. Although I have used gamedev.net as a reference at times, and is an excellent site, I have never had a reason to use the forums before.

As to not releasing the site, if you read my entire post you would read the reasons I did not do so. I posted this today because I am looking for some more people to help me in the various areas that I wrote in the above post.

As far as the proof is in the pudding statement, I have nothing to prove to you or anyone else my friend. This site is to help people not to benefit me in any way. If you do not like the site noone is forcing you to use it as a resource. The internet is a very large place and you can find just about anything you need out there if you know how to look.

As I said in he first post as soon as the core of the site is up(which again, if you read the entire post you''d already know that you can''t view it because it''s not up yet) I will announce it. When the site is up you''ll be able to reach me at site-specific e-mail addresses. For now this hotmail address works just fine, thanks.

Thank-You for your interest, and I wish you a happy New Year.

-Dan

P.S. Thank you for all your e-mails! I am getting a great response from everyone. Positions for moderator are filled up for now pending further discussion with the volunteers that have offered their help, but we can always use article writers/journalists and donations of programs. My e-mail is listed in previous posts.

What sort of articles are you after, mebbe we can discuss a little, and if im getting this right, its a non-profit organisation? Meaning coming from the community, back to the community? I''d love the oppertunity, but i dont have unlimited resources (girlfriend and work take up time you know )

Anyway, gimme a buzz if you wanna chat.

All I''m saying is that you make references to "Top-Notch" professionals, and such things, without releasing names or credentials. Such a resource would be, no doubt, useful, but why not advertise it after it''s up and running?

As for the spam bit, it just seems that you did not join the forums with the intent of being a long-term member of it, or with the intent of helping others with their problems in the context of these forums, but with the intent of advertising a site that isn''t up yet.

And as for not being able to release the name for legal reasons? Seems kind''ve strange to me. If everything is this far into planning, and there are still legal issues with the name of the site, something''s not right.

I completely understand your concerns skjinedmjeet, and I hope they will all be answered in time.

you are completely correct in assuming that I registered with this site to ask for help on my site(not really advertising in my opinion, but I can see where that is speculative), and I do not have any intention of helping on here, though it''s not because I do not enjoy this site. I actually use this site now and then(for instance, I''ve enjoyed many of the articles its put out), just never have for its forums.

As to why i''m not "advertising" the site until after its up and running, I suppose you still have missed the point of this original post. I am looking for help, volunteers, assistance, input, insight, etc. etc. etc. I''m not sure how to explain that any clearer, but I''m sure you understand by this third post.

In any case, skjinedmjeet, you''ll just have to be patient and see when it comes up. I hope that I don''t let you down, but its hard to say. If its not what is expected i''m sure between all of our staff, and the gracious input of the sites members we will make it what it should be. We are making this site only with the intention to help the community, and i''ll do the best I can to ensure that that will happen.

Thanks again for all your concerns, and all I can say to you (since i''m assuming by these posts you have no intention to offer help) is sit tight until the site is announced. You''ll be able to see it first hand then! I appreciate all your feedback.

imagine if you had your site up and running, and people signed up an account simply to advertise (or look for help on) their new sites.

this belongs in either the "Your Announcements" or "Help Wanted" forums, depending on your intentions.

i wonder how you will manage a website when you can''t even follow the ''netiquette at an established one...

Hi krez!

After I posted the topic here, I did realize this fact. Unfortunately I do not have the ability to move the topic over to another forum so there''s not much I can do to help you in that area.

Never-the-less, I am very pleased with all the wonderful e-mails i''m getting by you guys, and I really appreciate all the support! This is a great community project that will hopefully help many people in the future. I''ve already signed 6 people up from this website alone, with one more potential on his way!

Thanks again Krez for your wonderful insight! It''s greatly appreciated and will be taken under consideration in future posts!

Hi all!

I didn''t expect to have to do this, but due to the incredible response from all of you, I am asking that you all hold off from asking about any more positions until the site is up. I never expected this community to be so eager to want to help, and I really appreciate all your offers.

At this point, if you''ve been accepted then you know what to do. If you e-mailed me and I did not get back to you, sit tight, and I may contact you after we officially open. If we are in mid-communication, and i''ve said ok to you then you may give me an e-mail back and i''ll see what I can do.

You may of course e-mail me if you have any questions, but positions for this site are now are full, and we are taking no more people regardless of qualifications. We will set up an application form in the near future on the site. If you didn''t get accepted, or you were going to contact me, but haven''t yet, please be patient and you will have your opportunity after the site opens.

Again, i''m amazed that so many people want to be involved in this incredible project. It really makes me feel good that people are interested in a site like this, and I hope that everyone can get something positive from this.

Core of the site will be up now in 2-3 days, and i''m expecting a week to a week and a half of minor touch ups and additions. Again, i''ll post in the announcements forum when the site is up. As to this thread, I will no longer be checking it so if you do have any other questions please throw me an e-mail, don''t post here.

Thanks guys for this incredible response, and i''ll see you on the site!
