Very impressive... Good job!
My one comment offhand is that you might want to have some sort of timer for the shroom effect, to show how long it lasts, but other than that... The graphics and control are very smooth, even on this 233 MHz dinosaur.
Is it written in straight Swing/AWT, or did you use a third-party library?

Thanks! Not a bad idea at all to show the effect time, but then maybe it should be done for the shield too. Dunno where on the screen the timers would fit
And its all written in plain AWT.

very nice, would love to see your scroll code!
The map graphics is in one large jpg (ie. 1024x1024), that i break into tiles and then draw the tiles to fill the screen. All that i do, is keep track of the spaceship coordinates and just paint tiles according to them. No code here but you probably get the idea

Hmm... mabye a third meter next to the nitro/life bars at the top? Alternatley, you could just have some sort of warning (make the ship flash a different color or some such when it''s about to wear off), which would be almost as good.
