In the US we drive on the right side of the road, ICADK (in-case-anyone-didn''t-know). It also seems like folks in the US walk on the right side of sidewalks and stairwells and junk like that. Do folks in other countries (Britain) that drive on the left also tend to walk on the left?
I like the DARK layout!

Actually you''re supposed to walk on the left side of the road. That way you can face on comming traffic and get out of the way.

I vaguely remeber being conditioned in grade school to walk along the right side of the hallway. I assume this was in preperation for driving.

A lot of people walk on the side of the road that they happen to be on, regardless of the direction they are headed.

It''s bicyclists that need to get a clue. They need to ride with traffic. Their speed means they can appear unexpectedly, and drivers are looking in the direction of oncoming traffic, thus a bicyclist is less likely to come out of nowhere if they ride with traffic.

[Memory is sketchy here]

Swords where holsters on the left side if I remember correctly. The habits of which side to drive on was influenced by this. Wy when it came to saddle a horse which would be on the right side of the horse so that you could mount without the sword getting in the way. I would think this would influence the driving on the left side of the road.

If you where to pass a person carrying a sword in this fashion, you would pass them on the right to avoid the side carrying the sword. If this is still the case, I don''t know. Things usually get passed down through tradition. But that has changed with time hence the driving on the road.

That was a long version just to say, "I don''t know."

I actually often perfer when bicyclists are coming towards me. I''ve always felt it would be much easier for me to accidentally collide with a biker after making a turn, and he would never have time to react.

Pedestrians need to get a clue - you have no idea how many dumb people I almost hit when they step out without looking.

Argh!
