Feeling Odd...

Original Post
Does anyone know of any disease or disorder where someone may suddenly disconnect a memory of one person or many people? Say your best friend bob has always felt like your best friend. Then suddenly one day he literally feels like he''s a different person. Not because bob changed, but because of your view of bob is different. I''ve seen it happen to people and it has happened to me personally. Consiously you know that bob is still the same person, but he doesn''t feel like the same person.
Can anyone relate to this? Does anyone know what it is?

"Love is a disease"
It''s not a disease, merely a matter of perception. Many times, the friends we make are people we admire for certain reasons. Maybe they are outgoing, extremely intelligent, compassionate, etc. We become friends with them and subconsciously hold them in high esteem. Then, over time, things may happen that make us realize the flaws in that person, or make us realize that our perception of that person was a little off - but they''re still our friend. A best friend is someone who you know all their flaws, and they know all of yours, but you still like each other anyway.
So my advice is: don''t sweat it :D
"I''ve never seen that. I''ve never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the side of the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick. I''ve never seen that."

Starting to feel that way about some family members. The ones who bothered me before now seem cool while the cool ones suck now.
Life gets weird when things change so unexpected.

You''re not talking about thinking "oh maybe he''s not really my best friend... maybe I should think about him different", you''re talking about *SNAP* "huh... weird...", right?
I know what that feeling is, but I don''t know if it''s a specific cause...
Have you ever been writing a document when you look at a particular word that seems spelled wrong, but you know it''s right, but it just looks wrong no matter how you look at it? I think it''s the same effect.
In neural net application, there''s discussions about different types of nets that get "stuck" matching a certain input to a certain output. If you want the system to remain flexible, you have to slightly randomize the "stuck" section and slowly re-form it again. Maybe our brains actually do that and that''s what we''re feeling?

Oddly enough, there is a real condition that causes people to suddenly lose all "connection" to their friends and loved ones. I watched an hour long special on it on the Discovery channel a long time ago (years). It''s caused by trauma that disassociates the infrences made by the brain when it processes information about a person.
It''s caused by a similar occurence as when a victim of a terrible crime is shown a "possible" suspect and they suddenly attached all blame and rage to that suggested target.
I''ll look around to see if I wrote anything down about that show.

Wow, I guess it''s more common than I thought. The fact that people have this problem is kind of odd. Has anyone noticed if it occurs after experiencing emotional stress or something like that? Maybe after a big change? Any other significant events happen previous to feeling this way?
Nypyren: I have had the word problem thing happen to me before. It''s strange. Try to stare at a word and try to disconnect the words. It makes everything feel weird...
AtelierVisca: I think the symptom you''re referring to is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is known to cause something like that. Did they say that there is a less extreme to this type of "disconnection" ?

I''ve had that word thing too! It''s strange, you look at the word and detach its meaning from it. Suddenly it feels like another language and you think "Why does that word mean that?"

Its our nature. IMO love is something invented by us quite late in the developement. Just look at it this way, when you loose the connection to people, its just natures way of telling you that its time to move on. Change territory so to speak.
This thing that we are to love our families and have lifelong partnership/relationships is something that Id think we have adapted to quite late in the evolution.

Yepp. Thats it. Love was invented by women, or they would be alone. Makes sence since they are the ones that are most addicted to it

There is the possibility that you had a strange dream about a person and that has altered your view of them. It's a strange thing that frequently happens to me and maybe it does to other people. For example, one time I felt angry towards one of my family members who I hadn't seen in about two months. I stopped and tried to think of why this could possibly happen. Slowly a memory of a dream came to me. In that dream, we had a heated argument with each other. It's very strange. It seems that my brain saw that dream as a real event and made real conclusions and feelings from it, as if it actually happened.
One possible explanation might be that because a stressful period causes more intense dreams, you're more likely to have a dream where you are in strange or stressful situations with someone you know.
