Mentor Needed

Hello everyone, I am in the 8th grade and doing a "mentor project". This involves looking into a career I would be interested in. I have chosen the occupation of game programmer. In addition to researching, writing an essay, etc. I am required to make some sort of project related to my topic. For game programmer, I''m going to want to make a game or engine or something. So I''m going to need some help with this. Note that I''ll most likely be developing with DirectX 8 or so on Win32. I have ~6 years programming experience. I started with QBASIC at age 8 and have worked with C(++), Java, HTML, &#106avascript, Visual Basic, and assembler for Intel processors since then. I have _Tricks_of_the_Windows_Game_Programming_Gurus_ (1st edition, I think) by Andre LaMothe and it''s a good book. The only problem is that since I am only in 8th grade algebra, I just don''t have the math experience for 3D things. I think I''m at the 8th chapter or so, and it starts getting into trigonometry at that point. I''ve understood everything up to then. So, I think what my mentor would be mostly doing would be to either teach me the math/geometry or point me to some good (inexpensive) resources, and to help me with the occasional question. I won''t need help learning learning C++ for DirectX programming, and I''ve worked with the API a bit. Please consider this; I need to get going with this project or it won''t get done... Thanks. --Joey

Just make something 2D for your project, that doesn''t require too much math.

I remember for my 7th Grade Science Fair project I created a side-scrolling shooter (similar to R-Type) that only took me 6 weeks. Of course, your project could be something simpler that wouldn''t take quite as long.

But depending on how long you have to work on it, I would start with something simple, then maybe add input or physics or basic shapes, something of that nature.

Hope this helps a little bit, anyways.
