Dealing specifically to the AR Quake;

Why use GPS? Sure, the other equipment makes up for the lack of presision, but you still run into cost issues. GPS is expensive to keep a constant link to, and can also fail right out at times, leaving entire coodinates fucked, since you don''t get a signal.

Why not use a waypoint system?

I think the idea of the GPS might be to keep it based on COTS solutions - as opposed to building some sophisticated proprietary tracking system that has to put in place before hand.

Apparently with some kind of multi-channel off-the-shelf GPS system you can get accuracy down to about a half meter with a 10Hz update rate. Can''t recall if it was used on that project, but I''ve seen it on other AR projects.

Looks like an excellent way to get hit by a car.

Oop! Checked on the site.

10 updates a second at 50cm maximum innacuracy. But the guys at U of PEI aren''t creating maps for the area they are in. The objects are determined by proximity sensors, like the ones to track golf balls at up to 700 yards.

I''ll link to their site when I get the addy off them.
