I know that DX9 SDK installs DX8 headers as well, you should perhaps try to install the DX9 SDK

go ahead and install the dx9 sdk, include all the necessary dx9 include files, and make sure to add the dx9 libary's in the link thing. Then make sure your dinput version is set to 9 (0x009 or 0x900?). It all worked perfectly fine for me when I did it.

Agreed, what kind of errors are you getting? Maybe post the output from Visual C++ . That would help alot.

When I installed the DirectX 9 SDK, my DirectX 8.1 code worked pefectly fine. Check your include paths, maybe you are referencing the wrong version of the directX headers (ie DX7).
