hello I''m looking for a free 3d engine which I want to use in my game project. Currently, I know by name crystal space, genesis/jet3d, nebula and ogre. But which one to use? It should be easy to use, understandable, and cover colision detection/handling (but not a must) anyone out there wit hsome experience? thanx!!!

I would suggest Ogre, although it doesn''t have collision detection yet, though people are working on it.

Nebula (IMHO) has a VERY steep learning curve, Genesis3D is good but it''s old and limited. I think Jet3D is based on Genesis3D but I don''t know how good or complete it is.

Well, me personally i like truevision, but as of yet support for c++ aint properly implemented yet, you can use it with .net VB 5/6 and delphi. It is written in c++ so its pritty speedy, and it is really easy to use with many examples and tutorials especially for using with vb and the forums are really good, you can find the answers for any of your questions. Plus there are so many features to the engine, just check out

check out the features and screenshots, they are pritty sweet

You might want to give my engine a shot then, NeoEngine

It's a complete 3D game engine, meaning it has rendering (the normal stuff, scene management in BSPs and/or octatrees, extensive materials with multitexturing, patch surfaces, node hierarchy), sound, network, physics and collision detection. Also converters and exporters for popular formats/modelling packages.

If you do, make sure to grab the CVS version, or wait a week until the new 0.4.0 release is out of the door.

And yes, it supports Win32, MacOS X, Linux and FreeBSD.

I would recommend CrystalSpace 3d.. its got lots of features (yes that does mean it has a learning curve to it) but it has collisions, 3d engines, 2d isomap engines, physics engines and the new realse will have support for vertex and pixel shaders and a completely rewritten openGL renderer. It does require compiling the engine and plugins pretty often since its constantly being updated but you can just pick a stable release and use that too.

the QuakeIII engine isn''t free. The Quake2 Engine was released as Open Source, that might be what you are thinking about.

I''d recommend Nebula; the MonoWheel sample is a good starting point, and the Doxygen docs are pretty good.

When you realise the architecture of it, it''s fairly intuitive - and the scriptability is amazingly great.

Some kind of crystal ball. Or logic, because the both the Quake and Quake 2 sources are available. It''s almost definite that the Q3 source will be made available sometime, I''m not sure about "soon" though.

And even if, I still wouldn''t want to work with the Quake III engine I think I wouldn''t understand it...

I dont think they''ll release the Q3 source until *at least* two years after Doom 3 hits the market.
