Strange performance related problem.

I am developing a game (a classic, Space Invaders), using the latest version of DirectX (9.0). However, I''ve run into a problem: When I execute my app from VS.NET (with the debugger connected), I get an FPS of, well, ~2000-3000. No problem here. But when I compile the program, and run it from windows, the FPS drop to ~25. What puzzles me is why I don''t get this kind of performance drop from VS.NET. I''ve tried both compiling it as debug, and release, both behaved the same. And I use D3DPRESENT_INTERVAL_IMMEDIATE as the presentation interval, so the problem is not there, either. I have the following system spec/configuration: Windows XP SP1, DirectX 9.0 (I''ve tried both the debugger runtimes and the other), Visual Studio .NET 2002 (C++) Radeon 9700 PRO (with DX9 drivers installed), Intel Pentium 4A 1,8 GHz I do not think the problem is hardware related, as others have tested my app and had the some problem as I. Thanks, -Span

You should check to make sure there are no programs running in the background, as I have had the same problem. Any 3d-rendering in a window for example will fail to run at optimal perfomance if you have even the slighest resource hog running. Start->Run and type "msconfig" will bring up a nice utility for seeing what ''hidden'' programs are running in the background. The startup tab in the msconfig program dialog will show you a list.
