Anyone have experience or know of techniques for rendering over a network? Basically the host machine would send some sort of polygon data or maybe some other representation to the client machine to render, but I''m curious how/if people have approached the problem.

I was planning to write a small rendering program that would be able to use distributed processing using one machine as a server and other as rendering clients that would receive the data to render and send the results back to the server. The problem is ofcource to synchronise them to get the best performance. Because of lack of time it''s still in design phase though. (and probably it will never be finished)
You could take a look at http://gollum.flipcode.com. That guy has built a renderfarm and maybe he could provide you with some practical information.

I visited a presentation by someone from Silicon Graphics a month ago who presented their solution to this problem. They use highbandwidth wireless networks to send fully rendered images to the PDA/cellphone. And the person with the PDA/cellphone could control the renderserver remotely, loading new files, modification of the meshes etc.

If your client machine has 3D hardware/fast CPU then you could send over the mesh data (vertices, indices) perhaps simplified (LOD). That would stress the network less.

Good luck.
