That parents must be total assholes? I am 16, but in comparison to the crap that my friends pull my parents should be damn happy. Of course this is far from the case. Maybe it is because my mom is obsessive compulsive and my dad has been unemployed for some time. Maybe it is because I am a teenager and I am suppossed to hate my parents. What do YOU think? This weekend, my brother and I were doing our laundry and he told me he would finish it. A few hours later, my mom bitches at me about the laundry not being finished. So I in turn bitch to my brother about him not "following through" and told him to do the laundry. Being a crybaby, he tells my parents I was being mean to him and they get all on me about it. When I tell them that he said he would do the laundry, my dad says "Do you have it in writing? I want to see some physical evidence that he agreed to do this, because you are suppossed to do the laundry." So being a jackass, I ask him "Do you have that in writing? How should I believe you that I am suppossed to do the laundry?". He starts pushing me then raises his fist and says "Here is my writing!". Then he starts throwing the dishes that were on the counter onto the floor, shattering them.

I agree. Kill your parents. That will teach them a lesson.

Just laugh at them. Threaten to report them if they try and hurt you (you can, and they will take that seriously).

So he shatters the plates on the floor? Laugh at him and make fun of him, for he has just wasted his own money. You can easily put yourself in a position of superiority.

Take some of that shattered ceramic (glass whatever) and cut your dad''s throat. Then look at him with a tear in your eye and say "This pain I have caused you doesn''t even compare to the pain you caused me when you threw this plate to the floor. You''ll be dead in 5 minutes. I have to live with your actions for the rest of my life."

Or you could just start singing

"peanut butter and jelly with a baseball bat"

as you beat him to death and then plead temporary insanity in court.

Or...if death isn''t your thing

Get him a restraining order for Valentine''s Day.

I can''t speak for your dad, but let me say this -

For having two kids just a couple years younger than you, and from remembering how I was at that age, I can say that I now understand how my mother acted. I don''t give my kids too much to do in the way of chores, so I expect them to be able to handle those easily. Expect is the word - sometimes (a lot of times, really) I end up doing them myself.

Well, at your age, you have other things you''re thinking about so your chores usually slip your mind, which means your parents have to pick up the slack. That''s extra work for them that you should have been able to handle responsibly.

If you''re the oldest, then you have it twice as bad - you''re supposed to be the more responsible one. It''s the same way with my kids. My oldest boy needs to be responsible - a role model for his younger brother (who is also learning to be responsible).

One last thing - you may think they''re being hard on you, but what kind of person do you think you''ll be in 10 years if you had everything too easy? You''d find out that life is a lot harder than you knew growing up.

Your dad certainly did overreact, but I don''t see why you got upset from your mom not being happy about the unfinished laundry. All in all, it doesn''t sound you have it that badly compared to others. This kind of reminds me of my sister who makes big deals about when my parents don''t agree with something she''s doing, like being a TA for a period at high school instead of taking an eduactional class. She just doesn''t seem to see how lucky she is compared to kids with abusive parents.

Oh yeah, most teenagers do go through a rebelious period so you''re not unusual in that sense.

Or...and I know this is hard because you''re an obnoxious teenager...you could just start doing your own laundry and let your brother do his own laundry. Then if he doesn''t do it he can suffer the smelly consequences at school. There''s no argument.

If you''re dad is unemployed and your mom has issues well, sorry but you''re going to have to be a little more compassionate. Until he gets a job and has money comming in to pay all the bills he''s going to be one stressed out cookie.

Trying to get yourself in a position of "superiority" is just stupid and is only going to end up making your life even more miserable.

i never get how saying ''well, you may have mean parents who destroy things when they get mad at you, but it could be worse'' is supposed to help someone.

yes, im WELL aware that there are starving kids in africa, and people who are worse off; but dammit, that doesnt help at ALL. there are people in better positions - i dont mean moneywise, etc, but parent-wise - and i want that...

anyways, i wouldnt suggest killing them. but the baseball bat might be a good idea.

It''s interesting how little or not so little personality disorders happen and propagate through life. Someone who is slightly obsessive-compulsive affects a lot of people in their daily lives, who are all affected by it. They in turn may react with their own personality disorders and create yet even more conflict and tension. In this case, someone who may be obsessive-compulsive has married someone who is temperamental, and created someone who is obnoxious, all of whom are living and interacting together. That''s a dysfunctionality timebomb waiting to explode.

And then the flipside is how these personality disorders create the interesting sides of society. Why is it that great artists are often very abnormal people? The conflicts created from personality disorders leads to the creativity and beauty that benefits our culture.

I think I would have reacted the same way you did. I also think your dad extremely overreacted.

It''s pretty sad when this is considered not that bad. The fact that something worse is out the doesn''t make this incident any less bad. That man should be ashamed of how he treats his children. Don''t get me wrong, I think discipline is of the utmost importance, and I have no intention of pampering my children through life, but this goes way beyond discipline. Rage like that is unhealthy for anyone he ever meets.

Get used to it, that's natural.
When you get older and get a real job, imagine your boss gives you an assignment and you, in turn, tell someone under your supervision to see that it's done. Well if that person doesn't get it done, guess who's ass it is?

EDIT: oops, i read the end too fast and didn't realize what an ass the father is. Sorry mate.

It can be hard when there's a concern about people having too much control.

You didn't want your brother to be able to control everything by whining to your mom.
Your dad was convinced he could express the seriousness of his own need to control by breaking dishes.

It's like one of those "squeakiest wheel gets the grease" things.

Your mom was angry about the laundry not getting done, and you challenged your dad on things being "in writing". These things I don't consider to be so serious.

It's only reasonable to hope that people do what they promise to do and that families can reasonably talk things through without anger tracing its way through the whole family as each person feels challenged.

Best thing to do, as with many things, is clear out the interference, and do what you know needs to be done.

And no, that doesn't mean kill your parents.
And I definitely wouldn't recommend laughing at your dad, although expressing disappointment that dishes got broken would have been appropriate.

One of those strange difficulties about growing up is the relationship with your parents becoming suspiciously disagreeable, as you come of that age where you are becoming ready to get out on your own and they have to deal with letting go.

I know a lot of this is just random conjecture. Maybe some of it applies. Do with it as you will.

Beat up the bastard. My younger brother always thinks he can do what he likes on me. So beating up him once in a while is a good plan. After beating him up he obeys me, he even gets me the phone when I tell him to.

Like it or not you are obligated to deal with these people until you are an adult. At that point, you can make the decision about who you want to associate with. I''d recommend that you grit your teeth and bear it, and get as far away from those people as possible when you have the legal right to do so.

It sucks that you don''t have the option because you''re a minor, but that''s only a temporary hold they have on you. Let them behave any way they want. Once you are an adult, treat them just like you would any other crazy person doing that stuff. Shun them. Live your own life. Let them wallow in their crap.

Sorry you''re stuck with dealing with them for now. Just remember there will always be unreasonable people in the world that have no moral problem wasting your time, your life, and your productivity. Just be glad you don''t live in Cambodia and can get out of the situation in a few years.

anyway. I am proud to say that people on gamedev ACTUALLY CAN get serious oncein a while

Its true. You are older and you have all the responsibility, no matter how unfair it gets, you''ll always be the one with more responsibility. Besides you said yourself that your dad is currently unemployed, and that can make things ver ver stressful. His mood is probably swinging like mad on an emotiuon seasaw, so dont worry, shit happens.

I''m 16 too. I have a sword in my room. You should get one too.

Mine''s unsharpened of course, but the end is stil pretty pointy. One good stab will show those bastards who''s the boss in this house.

Failing a sword, baseball bats can also be quite messy and fun.

One you''re finished with them, you can cut them up and put the pieces in garbage bags. BONUS: Use the garbage bags to store broken plates as well.
