Would it be better to start learning DirectX 9.0 if you know very little about DirectX, or should I just go with 8.1 and adapt to 9.0 when it''s a little more widespread? (AFAIK it seems like 9.0 is pretty new and not in widespread use, right?) Then there''s also the fact that all the tutorials I seem to find talk about 8.1... Should I just go with 9.0 and forget about the old versions?

Hard to say really. Both are pretty much the same in terms of nearly all the interfaces.

The jump from DX8.0 to 9.0 is insignificant compared to 8.0 from 7.0! (I was tempted to say, "next to the power of the force" right there)..

Anyways, depends what you want out of directx. If you want to use it with .NET, then 9.0 is your answer. If you need to support win95 then 8.0 is the one for you. The 3d pipeline is virtually the same between the two (with some small exceptions of course)...

Of course the D3DSpy utility is totally awesome, and I wish it worked for ANY D3D interface..but I''ll take it for only 9.0..
