I''m currently writing on a cross plattform 3d game. I use GLUT, and 95% of the source is plattformindependet code. On Linux I meassured about 60 frames per second. When I render the same scene on windows I just get about 25 frames per second. How is this possible? I ran it on the same computer (multiboot system). I can''t belive that the reason is the performance differences of the drivers (I have a NVidia graphics card an I use their drivers on Windows an Linux). And I alway thought windows would be better for games... ;-) Cone

are u using the same screensize + colordepth with both versions?
is cpu use on both systems the same?

Yes, all equal

> is cpu use on both systems the same?

It is even the same system which has both operating systems installed (by using a boot manager)

Cone83, cpu usage in zedzeek''s post refers to how much of the cpu is used when running the program. So to put it another way, do you run a bunch of other programs while testing it in windows?

On both system it grabs 100% of the CPU ;-)
I tried it on windows when no program was running and I could speed it up to 40 Frames, but that is still much slower than with linux.

Screenshots and Source are availible at balour.sf.net
I recently made engine redesign (not yet totally completed) which is just in the CVS but I had the problem before.

perhaps youre running off the hardware path with the windows driver which isnt happening under linux, grab the latest drivers for windows + linux.
also perhaps u have FSAA enabled in windows

Off topic: with good drivers, that is not the case. With the next kernel release (2.5.x, to become 2.6.x) the gap will only widen (2.5.x is a huge improvement over 2.4.x).
