I want to make my own device or something.. like, i want an array of pixels, and then I could do whatever I wanted to the pixels, and then blit, or flip, or put them on the screen somehow. Are there any source examples of this? Or would DirectX run better... I want alpha-blending etc, being able to edit the pixels myself as well. I have a D3d sprite wrapper, but i think it is too slow maybe. DirectDraw doesn''t support rotation or alpha.. maybe it supports alpha blending, i don''t know... But anyway, ...? Sorry for the bad english , my head hurts today. return Neff; // End babble

if you want to edit the pixels in real time, DirectDraw is ideal since you won''t have to worry about converting to textures and dealing with different texture formats. However, as you said, there is no support for rotation or alpha blending so you would have to do this stuff yourself. Rotation is sort of difficult, but alpha blending is easy. However, both would be pretty slow in DirectDraw and you would get nowhere near the performance you can get with Direct3D.

what exactly are you trying to achieve? For both DirectDraw and Direct3D it would be ideal if all or most of the per pixel stuff could be done at load time, and all your renderer has to do is render the textures to the screen.

I want to be able to do something like Liero, or XOP. Nice and classic low resolution with lots of shrapnel/explosions etc. I want to maintain a nice smooth gameplay. Thanks for responding!
