Game Dev... It would be really awesome if you guys could do, or maybe refresh us newbies to the site, an article on DIRECTX vs. OPENGL. I think it would be very informative especially if I have no ideas which way to go for a guy who has 2 years experience in C++ and other computer languages. Thank you. -Taylor

I agree. The current article is not that much out of date, but certainly needs to be re-written.

It does not weigh each API equally aganst one another. Someone should write an article like this again know actually knows each language completely, including all the really advanced stuff that I have no clue about.

To me, when I read this article, I get a clear impression that the author is in favor of OpenGL. I admit that it is hard to write unbiased, but I''m sure someone else can do a better job.

I also think that the article should *only* compare Direct3D to OpenGL (which it does pretty well in the current article), because comparing sound to graphics is pretty pointless.

I am a DirectX user, and I am not crying because directx is the best and everyone should use it. I don''t think that at all. I just think that if we are going to be refering newbies to something, it should be very respectable of both API''s, so that they can make their choice based upon fact.

Yeah.. everyone thinks that direct3d and openGL are "equal", and OpenGL is obviously better because it's open source AND platform independant. Seems biased to me, but like I say, it's hard to write un-biased.

You know what's funny ? I use OpenGL, and guess what, Promit's article seems in favour of Direct3D, in my opinion... Writing an unbiased article might be hard, but you also have to read it unbiased. And that is probably even harder.

The article is pretty OK, actually. It would not make much sense to include next-level stuff, simply because there is zero difference between D3D and OpenGL here. It's only about semantics at this level. Not really the best position for a comparison article. Furthermore, if a programmer has the experience required to use the really advanced effects, then he will also be able to exactly pin-point his API of choice, without needing an article for that.

D3D vs. OGL articles are primarily targeted at beginners. So advanced stuff should not be considered, as experience is required to understand the implications of such an advanced, very detailed comparison. What matters, are the big fundamental differences, and Promit's article outlines them pretty much all.

Just a note, OGL isn''t opensource. It is platform independent as long as driver exists for it in the target platform.
