Can anyone recommend some deacent firewall software? It has to be free, and preferably powerful. I don''t mind how difficult it is to use. Either i find some deacent softwarem, or i go back to Linux... Also, does anyone know of any software (probably part of some firewall software) that lets you redirect traffic? E.g. pipe incomming TCP on port 23 to 192.168.0.2 on port 1337? Just out of curiosity for this though. Also also, Anyone know about writing your own firewall software? I assume this would mean writing various low level drivers and stuff though. Thanks for any replies

Zone Alarm is the best software firewall you can get, and it is free, unless you want the pro version.

I think you mean port forwarding. Zone Alarm Pro can do this, as well as hardware firewalls like NetGear.

Zone alarm at www.zonelabs.com (Not quite sure adress is right) is pretty good. It blocks net traffic based on what program doing it as opposed to what port it's on. When a program trys to become a server or trys to connect to the net it gives you a dialouge box where you can choose what to do.

ZoneAlarm is a nice firewall, except that on some PCs it causes random reboots. The problem seems limited to Win2k and XP. If it weren''t for that I would definitely run it.

I run zone alarm on XP Pro and it doesn''t cause any trouble. My dad uses zone alarm on 2000 and it doesn''t cause any trouble there either

I would buy a router... I use mine like that... Just make sure it''s programmable. I also use firewalls on my comps so I can''t be attacked on my internal network... I would recommened you use both...

Thanks, Zone Alarm seems to be working fine.

Anyone know about writing your own software? Will that involve loads of low level stuff? I noticed that ZA didn''t need to restart the computer, which makes me think that theres nothing too substantial going on at a low level.

Thanks for all the replies
