Hello everyone. First of all I would like to state the following very much bugs me. ------"I have this great new game idea! It is so cool! Anyway, it would be this huge online game..." -(blah blah blah, you know the rest.) I just needed to get that off my chest. What I really wanted to talk about is that I am trying to learn OpenGL and I want some experience of working with other people. I don''t care if the end result was a small game of pac-man. I just wanted to learn to cooperate with other programmers to create a finished project. I don''t know much about OpenGL, so I would not be of much help. So if some group or individual would let me tag along, I would be most grateful. Thank you for your time, and happy coding!

Hey Flame,

Well, I think i am in the same situation you are in. I have been learning opengl for about 2 to 3 years, on and off while also learning Direct X. I have been programming c++ for 5 years so thats not a problem. I have made a small pong clone and want to move on to another 2d game. If any other intermediate opengl programmer wants to join me and flame, that would be great.

I REALLY want to program with others and create something worth showing my friends, family, gamedev community, etc. I have been working on a Contra game for about a week but I can put that off to work on something. Maybe we could even make something like contra.

BTW, I hate those topics too.

Cheers,

Chris

this sounds interesting. I wouldn''t mind taking part in the making of a simple game. I''ve been learning opengl for a while and so far I''ve come up with this: http://www.btinternet.com/~rmosquera/pm3d/pm3d.rar

anyway, count me in.

cheers,
rich

Cool, I am just bumping this up because i think it is something that is a very interesting idea. I like your demo, especially the beginning intro movie, uhhh, star trek looking beginning thingy. I think we could really acomplish a lot.

Anyone else?

Cheers,

Chris

Hello,

I am a bit more experienced as I have been programming OpenGL for a few years now, I''ve done a lot with 3d/more complex things than you are talking about, but the post was entitled "apprenticeship" so I would be happy to help with whatever project you might choose, maybe help with engeneering side of projects.

I think I may have explained my experience wrong. The Contra clone is ported to a fully 3d environment. I wrote a 3d engine the could do the things I needed it to. I had music, sound, particle class, collision, model and texture loading, landscape, and even a level loader with my own file format... I even developed a lock on system for the gun. I stopped just now because I do not have the modeling expertise to fully utilize the engine. That is why I have been trying to find a *serious* team to work with.

I don''t really have any demos unless you want to see my pong clone. My engine is temporarily not exectutable because I have been working on an octree culling method (who isnt?) and its not ready to be used just yet.

But it seems like we have enough talent, we just need some organization. I might start a new thread asking for people because this one isn''t really attracting enough people with its name. Anyway, Flame, I would like to start a small group of people to work with. You could tag along with us and watch the dev cycle if you want.

Cheers,

Chris

That sounds like a great idea Tigra. Thank you. Will everyone either post their messenger IDs or email them to me so we can stay in touch? My email address is flamepixel@hotmail.com.

i would like to join your team ! I ve got knowledge in opengl (and also in directx) and improve my knowledge in opengl should be great!
i see the sideh''s demo , and i think i m in the same level
(heuu... if you think my english is awful, excuse me... i''m french...)

i was just thinking, why not find a few people with the same interest and start an online based game. U could get the input from all the people for a story line, and im sure the end result might be good...also, msn would be great for this kind of reason, u could start team chat''s

as i see it, (flashy concept/game art) + (nice website) = a working team
Maaaaaaaahahaha. Who''s da king baby?

not to sound rude but

non-proffessional company + ambitious project = failure
(this is not always true, but most of the time, it happens)

Anyway, thats why I like to keep it simple. I mean face it, it takes professional companies(with thousands of employees who actually get paid) several years to create a good game. Now how long to you think it would take about 5(or even ten) coders/designers/artists to create a game that would even come close? And without pay, its very easy to loose your motivation. And most of the time these little "companies" aren''t organized at all.

Its OK to dream of starting your own small company and making proffessional quality(or even close) games, but get real. Forty-nine out of 50 times, it ain''t gonna happen. So for everyone who''s listening: WAKE UP! The reason you should be learning how to code/design/model now should be to gain experience for when you get a REAL JOB. That actually pays. Face it. Odds are you aren''t going to make much money without getting into an actual company.

I guess that''s the end of my lecture. I hope it was a good wake up call.

as for a game idea, how about multiplayer connect 4. Simple game and might even be fun.

Hello,

I think you all have a great attitude for making a game and learning along the way. Especially since I''m not interested in putting a lot of time into a project that will never see the light of day (like 99% of the postings I see). If you''re looking for more people, count me in.

I''ve been out of school for four years. I''ve mostly done Java programming, but recently I''ve relearned C++ so I could do plug-ins for 3d animation software. I know some OpenGL. I''ve done a Tetris clone and a Breakout clone both in Java. Graphics performance in Java is pretty hard to get, so I''m excited to try some C++ game programming.

i''m agree with FlamePixel (non-proffessional company + ambitious project = failure)
in my case it will be the first time i will coperate with another programmer ,and i''m wonder how we can organise.

im currently working on a simple opengl engine - just for learning purposes with a couple of other people. we''re not trying to create a revolutionary engine or an mmorpg - we''re aiming for reasonable targets that actually have a chance of getting finished. maybe you want to consider joining us...

check out our project page:

Yea I''m in... sry I haven''t replied...I have been working on my Contra game non-stop. I hope that no one has left yet. Organization is underway... hopefully something like a website will show some people the way. We only need 4 maybe 5 programmers so get in the chat soon.

But I am in the chat right now so get in if you want to join. We can talk there about how to get some organization and about what kind of game to make.

I''m hoping that maybe we can get a webmaster or something so we can make a forum. That way we can communicate better. Any webmasters reading this?

Anyway, I hope that some more people can respond like maybe a *free*-lance modeler or something could join up with us. I already have some basecode lying around with initiation and the like. My coding style is completely object oriented. It should be VERY easy to read and understand for you flame.

GET IN THE CHAT!!

Cheers,

Chris
