Maximum VB size?

What exactly is the maximum Vertex Buffer size that you can create. In the SDK it talks about the max number of vertices you can draw in a single drawprimitive call, but there''s no mention of the vertex buffer limit (or at least, none that I can find). I only ask because I''m getting creation errors with non-specific descriptions trying to create anything with more than about 420,000 polygons in it (very approximate calc). Learning to fly is easy, but as a tortoise, the landings are really rough.

For a tortoise, this is extremely hard to do, but when you get it right... the expression on their faces ...

i think tha max number is 65,000. at least in my card.

The biggest size you can create is the size just before it fails.

There is no hard limit -- well, up to 2^32-1. If you think it''s failing because of size, try something smaller -- like 1024 -- and you''ll have your answer.

Yah, if I create a height map with 200x200 height entries it loads fine(200x200=40,000 vertices, but I do a lot of tessellation for lighting reasons. Plus, I only render sub-sets of the VB... i.e. do my view culling, so it's not a problem with the rendering). If I go over this (to 250x250) it fails, but in a spectacular way that requires rebooting. I don't really want to have to revert back to using multiple VB's because I already (after some serious re-work) switched from multiple VB's to a single VB for performance reasons.

VB size is limited by memory only.
Yet, when rendering, you''d have to make sure to conform to the limitations posed by the card (i.e. MaxVertices and such)

That''s what I thought, but I''ve got a GeForce4 4600 128mb card and 512 mb ram so... It''s most likely something else, eh?

How many bytes are you requesting when it fails?

Could it be that you''re filling up video memory with textures beforehand and there''s not enough room left for the vertices?

Hmmm. A good thought, but I''m loading +/- 40mb of textures directly to the video card, the rest are all poolmanaged.
