I am developping an application where I uses several balls and a BSpline ground. I use shadow volume(I use a cylinder->ball shadow volume). As I use D3D, I chose a buffer 24 bits for ZBUFFER and 8 bits for STENCIL. The problem is when I am close of the ball, the application changes its frame rate from 60 to 30 FPS. Does the stencil buffer is not supported by the hardware? Moreover, I tried to limit the number of face of the shadow but it''s not as smooth as I wanted.

If the Stencil wasnt supported in HW then you''d be getting a lot less tah 30fps! It sounds to me like you''re fill rate is maxing out as you get closer to the object, thus your fps is dropping. As you have vsync enabled because your gfx card cant manage 60fps anymore it drops to 30 fps as it has to sync with monitor. Either - optimize the hell out of your scene (BSP/Octree/frustum culling/ etc) and/or swith to no vsync and you may find that your fps goes up again.
