I''ve asked this question many times before, not getting very many relatively acceptable answers. It started flame wars and such... I will ask once again. Does anybody know of any resources one engine development? I would very much like to learn what the aspects of an engine are, how to put it together, design, and then putting together a game. Websites, Books, etc. would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks.

thanks...but is there one that uses OpenGL as its graphics rendering API? I dislike the use of Direct3D, although I would like to use it for things other than graphics, like input, sound, etc.

the problem is that there aren''t many tutorials for engine development, are there.... it''s very sad. looks like i''ll never get a game more complicated than pong out...

I don''t mean to make this an arguement or anything sab, and I definatley don''t wanna start a flame war either, however I do believe that it would be difficult to write a tutorial on engine development being that there are (as far as my limited knowledge lends me to believe) so many components involved in writing an ''engine''. There would be graphics components, sound components, networking etc, each component overall would be written to perform tasks on a particular style of game. Meaning that you couldn''t write a tutorial on how to build a general ''engine''..

You will get more than Pong out if you learn to program, write all your own components and learn as you go along. If you don''t know how to program the components how do you expect to program the engine.

Now I add to this that I am by no means an advanced programmer, and I don''t even understand how to program in 3d.. my understanding of this comes from over a year of reading posts on this site. And I hope my opinions don''t attract anything other than constructive corrections of my possibly flawed ideas..

Definitely buy a book.

Pick the book based on what kind of game you'd like to develop, but they pretty much *ALL* these days cover a general overview of making an entire engine (GUI, sound, input, graphics, AI, and even -- in some cases -- networking). I mean, most people on these sites actually complain about the fact that they start too basic and cover the whole process from the bottom up.

From pretty much any book you can basically develop an entire, simple version of an engine. With that experience under your belt, you should be able to flesh out whatever areas you like for future designs.

If you need help on picking one, there are book reviews on this very site.

I have started a game engine with a group of programmers from my work. I have registered it with sourceforge.net and hope to present the work as it goes along so we all can learn about design and coding a game engine. Everything isn''t perfect and will probably be redesigned numerous times. The whole engine will have UML diagrams for the most part and all the source will be available 24 hours a day.

The site is
hooge.sourceforge.net

it will take me at least another week to get the site going. Currently there is only a front news page. Feel free to follow the development

May I suggest http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,594,00.asp as a quick start on the theory?
