I recently discovered Blitz Basic on the Net, and it seems pretty cool. I was wondering which is better for writing a 2D, shareware-quality game: Visual C++ or Blitz Basic? What are the pros and cons of both those development tools when it comes to writing a 2D game?

C++! dont waste your time with an inextensible language like BlitzBasic. Your game will be dictated by the functionality of the language. Go for the biggie- you wont regret it.

Ah, i must agree.. Blitz Basic would probably not be the best way to go. Though it all depends on your skill.

C++
-Fast. Powerful. Flexible.
-Harder

Blitz Basic
-Decent speed. Limited expandability.
-Easier

While Blitz basic may look good on the surface, don''t even try building a large serious project with it. I played around with darkbasic until i realized that if i tried to make a game with any amount of complexity, it would become an organizational mess. Blitz basic is better than dark basic at this, but nowhere near as much as c++. Also, with a generalized development package like that, it will never be as fast as an engine written for a specific purpose (though it may be faster until you can optimize your engine otherwise).
Personally, i don''t feel that blitz basic and the like give the satisfaction that doing it yourself in c++ gives.

For what you are looking for, Blitz Basic is fine. You''ll have to develop a lot of libraries to go with Visual C++. BlitzBasic has a lot of this built it.

Sure, it has it''s limitations. I recently decided not to use it because I really needed a more robust typedef mechanism. In that sense the language isn''t so extensible, even weak and restricting. That''s puts it out of the question for the more serious commercial products.

However, one thing to remember is that BlitzBasic does support DLL''s, so it''s as functionally extensible as you''d like.

For what you want to use it for, I''d give it a go. Have you tried the 30 use trial?

Hi,
my experience from using Blitz Basic(Though this was for a 3D Project)was i found myself needing features of C++ like classes and more,to be kind to Blitz,it isn''t for any serious project.
C++ is ''Basiclly'' the way to go ,for game developers.
Steve.
