Hey, I have two questions 1.)I need a good site jhtat has 3D game programming tutorials. Not just some stupid one where it goes-and you need patients and detrimatantion. I can figure that one out without a tutorial. I''ve asked this before and people said articals and resources in gamedev.net Well the only porblem with that is none of them actually tell you how to program and make games(in visual c++ or c#). So could you please give me a good tutorial on it? 2.)Whats the difference between programming in directx and c++? Thank you for your time

1) www.gametutorials.com Although really it''s the type of thing you have to figure out on your own. Online articles will only go so far. Try a bookstore too.
2) DirectX is an API. C++ is a programming language.

It looks like you have a lot to learn before you even begin to program games.

Yes that''s pretty much it. I''ve laerned visual c# and c++,
and a little java, mastered &#106avascript(big deal)
And thats about it. I just now ordered tricks of the game programming gures(2nd edtion) So hopefully that will help.
But i need some tutorials to back me up while I''m waiting.
I''m making a game whitch is supposed to begin to 3 weeks.
So I need to learn now. i''ll stay up all night every night if i have to. And yes, I''ve been there. Only c++ prorams that i''m making already by muself. I want a 2d/3d game tutorial

Come on AP, cut it down a bit... I was programming 2D games for years when I discovered OpenGL is *NOT* a language...

My favorite way of learning is to plan out a game - usually one whose rules I can describe in a few sentences - and breaking up the game into steps : asteroids explode, bullets move and hit asteroids, etc... Then, I break each of these steps in substeps : find out if the asteroid is big enough, if it is then spawn more, smaller asteroids, etc... I end up with a list of small rules and steps that I can try to program. And if I can''t program them, I ask for help on that particular step.

If I teach you how to make ONE game, you''ll know how to make that game.
If you find out how to make ONE game, you''ll know how to make thousands.

patients and detrimatantion.

Honestly: If you worry about patience and determination, I suggest programming is NOT for you.

Really, honestly. Those are - as I see it - two of the most important character traits in a programmer.

Ed. : Oops. I misunderstood the post a bit I guess. Sue me, I blame the spelling.

Will you??? Not expecting you to. Or do you have a tutorial I could use?

Well your first step would be to download the direct x API

Its 100 meg file that gives you all the help files and so on so that you can start programming with direct x. The direct x help files are your best friend learn to use them.

I learned how to program 3d games ( much much much harder than 2d ) games from a website called gameinstitute.com. They have 1-2 month courses that teach you how to use direct x and are really good. It only costs 100 bucks a course and you get a certificate for passing the class. The direct 3d course gets really confusing towards the end and moves very fast but worth it and the other courses are fairly easy to follow if you know your C++ and very worth it.

Ill start off by saying its a lot more complicated that it sounds. I wrote a 3d program with 2d billboard bitmaps for the fire water wind earth demo. Its under goomyman and you can download it and use my source. Its literally as easy of a get started with 3D source code there is anywhere since i went through tons of tutorials and removed the crap i didnt want ( sometimes error checking -very bad idea- just to make it easier to read and understand. It lacks serious commenting, it cant do animation ( although the newest version im working on can do animation ). I thought it was mad cool considering i only had a voodoo 3 to work with and windows paint to draw my graphics.

Feel free to use my source to learn, it does particles, loads x files, and does sky mapping, lighting, and billboards which are 2d images in a 3d world that just rotates with your changing view so it looks 3d. Go through the code line by line using the direct x help files on anything you dont understand. Practice moving around the images on the screen to see what does what. Its made up of probably 20 files and 3/4ths of them will be the same for any direct 3d game. AKA checking the video card for supported resolutions. Checking the videocard to see if it can do the effects you want. Setting the color depth and so on. Good luck, im still learning too.

edit- i made the demo in direct x 8 so good luck getting the direct x 8 api since its unsupported now hehe. Or you could convert it to direct x 9. I did it and it was quite easy and would be good pratice.
