I just switched from 2000 to XP and I''ve been having a lot of problems. First of all, the bootup time is very fast. It''s loaded up in seconds. One small problem though, I can''t run anything (except explorer / internet explorer windows) for about 5 minutes! My virus scanner (Norton AV) sits there in the taskbar from startup with a red X over it (showing it is disabled) for about 5 minutes, after which MSN Messenger loads and the X goes away. It isn''t caused by either of these programs or any others. I went through my registry, start menu, and win.ini and stopped anything from starting up with windows. Also, it was doing this before I installed NAV. Another (small but pretty annoying) problem is the start menu. I have it in the normal XP mode. When I click on the Start button, it comes up no problem and I can run anything off the first menu. But when I move the mouse over "All Programs", It takes sometimes up to 30 seconds for the menu to come up. Biggest problem of all: The framerates of all of my games, ones I have written, and others, have dropped significantly. Very significantly. By over 100 FPS in one case (a little demo I wrote, not very hard on the computer at all). My hardware isn''t the problem. p3 933 mHz, 448MB RAM, Creative Blaster 32MB GeForce 2. It all ran fine under Win2k. I don''t think it''s a driver problem either. I updated all my drivers, no dice. Also, I''m not running any adware or anything. Is anyone else having any problems like this? Can anyone help me??? If not, can I go back to 2000 without formatting again ? One other weird thing. When the mouse cursor changes, I see a brief flash of random pixels where the cursor is. It''s hard to describe... and I cant get a screenshot of it. I''m using the default cursors.

"One small problem though, I can''t run anything (except explorer / internet explorer windows) for about 5 minutes!" - I had the same problem. Here''s how I got rid of it: Go to "Tools" -> "Folder Options" -> "View" in an Explorer window and disable "Automatically search for network folders and printers". I found that on some web site, and it helped.

Geez, I keep getting Error 500...

I have/had that problem. The cause appears to be Nvidia''s drivers (I have a TNT2). I didn''t notice it on older drivers, but newer ones were slightly more unstable and had more bugs.

About low FPS, it might be that the WinXP drivers for your card have vsync on by default. You should be able to change that somewhere under display properties | settings tab | advanced button. About the mouse cursor, try going to advanced display properties (as above) and go to the troubleshooting tab and set hardware acceleration down one notch. That might also help FPS some. All it does is diable use of a hardware accelerated cursor which is buggy on some cards (not sure if GF 2 is one of them).

Almost typo-ified using Extrarius'' AUTOMATIC Typo Generator, but I decided to be nice =-)

Make sure that your video drivers are fully compatable with Windows XP. Even if they are compatable, go the the site of your card manufacturer and check if they released any new drivers.
