I have start building a simple level editor.Ok the usual buttons for the camera, moving etc are to exist but how complex should the render be?Do I need to build a complete 3d engine to be a tools programmer?I am using OpenGL.By the way how well should I learn OGL?Is it possible to use the code from an existing open source engine in order to make the editor? Thanks. Your really going to have a hard time making a level editor using opengl if you dont have a very good knowledge of the api...

Of course, it depends on how complex the levels are.

If your rendering engine is entirely in 3D, then, yes, you''d probably want the level designer to be able to navigate in 3D, therefore you''d have to have intricate knowledge of the engine in order to make the tool.

For one of my games, the level design was pretty simple, and it only took me a few hours to knock out a simple level editor - and that was when I didn''t know all that much about OpenGL:

How much should you learn OpenGL? How much should you learn *anything*?

As much as humanly possible.
