Anybody no of any tutorials or could just give me some clues on how to carry out the textuing of a landscape. I want to be able to use different textures for different heights within the landscape. I think I need to use volume textures but I don''t even know where to start implementing them. I''m using DirectX9 but I don''t care what API any advice is in. Here''s a thing has anyone noticed that DX9 can reset your computer if you misuse some of the abilities (like volume textures). Cheers Mark

Well, heres how I do it:

I do my modelling in lightwave, and assign UV coords to a big 50x50 squares square, so from the top it looks something like this:

Theres a feature called displacement maps that displaces the points based on a greyscale image. I take a regular 256x256 colored image (of like grass, throw in some greyish areas for rocks, brown areas for dirt etc...)save it in color, then convert it to black and white. Then I apply the colored texture to the big square, and then the greyscale to the displacement map for it. A benefit of this is you can precisely place and texture your mountian, hill or whatever. It works really well, and you can make pretty much any terrain type you can think of this way.

My 2 cents,
Jason

An interesting observation is that even tho youre stretching this image across a big square, even if you look at it from "eye level", the stretched texture still looks good.
