A few months ago, i asked what the deal was with glut. I was told that it is sort of a helper library that lets you get up and going with a small game or demo quickly. But if you want to create a larger game (and dont mind limiting it to windows only), then you should drop the glut and just program windows only. So ive been learning how to program directly in windows without glut. Ive been learning about WINMAIN and all that good windows stuff. So i downloaded nehe''s latest basecode and he doesnt use glut either, but he DOES use something called "glu" and "glaux". What are these? should I drop these as I have dropped glut? thanks!

Glut is a multi-platform API for creating windows and callback handlers for OpenGL applications. At the moment I am using it for my current project and so far have had no problems with it. The only drawback that i see at the moment is that the keyboard handler is a bit restrictive, and there is no sound implementation.

glu is basically just a set of utility functions for gl. eg, the gluLookAt command encapsulates several gl calls to manipulate the modelview matrix.

glaux is an old library of functions to set up a window for gl without having to touch the win32 api. it is a predecessor of glut.

so- glu is helpful to use, glaux should not be used, glut is helpful if u don''t want to worry about messing around with the win32 api. also check out glui for a library of simple widgets.

cheers

The main reason that the NeHe tutorials use glaux is because of the .BMP texture loading. When you get to the tutorials where he starts using TGA files, he drops the glaux library from the basecode.
