Gaining Assembly Experience

Every once in a while I see a company looking for game programmers that have assembly experience. I have a couple of questions on this: 1. What type of assembly are they talking about? x86? I''d imagine assembly for some of the consoles would be different, since they''re not all running on Intel hardware. 2. I took a class on analyzing x86 and SPARC assembly routines, but I don''t know how well I would be able to optimize something written in assembly. What''s the best way to go about improving assembly skills? 3. Is assembly optimization really as important as it used to be? Compilers are pretty damn good these days, and I wonder if it''s all sort of just a useless gesture. Been wondering bout this kind of thing for a while... anyone have any comments? -Riskbreaker

In my opinion being able to code in assembler lost most of its importance ...
but it can show that you have a very deep understanding how things are done by the computer and therefore may be interesting for companies ...
