I''m starting out with Java and am wondering what compiler to use. I know there''s the command line one that comes with the SDK, but I think I want something a little more graphical (I''m coming from Visual Basic, and I can''t imagine how you program without being able to lay out your interface visually). I have this Sun ONE Studio, and I have not been able to do anything with it successfully so far. Is this what I am looking for? What is the best IDE or visual development environment or whatever you call them for Java (Windows 98)? Thanks, in advance

Try jcreator from (http://www.jcreator.com) - it may not be full featured like APs suggestion but it is clean, solid and free. In fact, I am told there is very little difference between the registered and unregistered versions. It looks identical to VC6 and is really a nice piece of software - I am planning on buying out of principle (I don't really do much java development).

You will want to get the Java SDK, docs, and runtime and install those first as Jcreator's installation helps you set up these resource locations on install - and this will save you some time.

Hope that helps -

CodeGuide is really great, it detects errors while you''re typing the code, it has great refactoring capabilities, auto completion is really good, in short the best Java IDE I have ever come accros.

Whoever told you that didn''t check the facts.

The most important differences are code completion, source code navigation and debugger interface. I wouldn''t even think of writing anything without a debugger.

But I agree it''s a very nice IDE.
