Both are possible right now, but what use is blocking a user if they can just sign up with a new account. It just makes them harder to track.

Actually, a really good idea that I came up with necroing a thread ages ago was to automatically lock any thread older than 6 months say. This would keep morons like NumbChucks (who I know is the person anonymously resurrecting dead threads) from bringing up stupid topics.

I think Michalson said that would be a feature in the new forums. Only it would be 3 months.

And so, the evil religion thread stole the wonderful "What the Heck?" thread's throne. Truly a sad day for gamedev.

Correct, though the "3 months" was just an example. What is refered to as the "expiry" period for posts is set on a per forum basis. Forums like Game Design and AI will get the longest (6 months?) expiry periods, while day by day forums like the Lounge will get relatively short ones (probably less than a month). If someone thinks there are special circumstances that warrent reviving an expired thread they can just email a mod/staffer who can "bump" the thread back to life.

Even though this is already implemented, I am certainly interested to hear what features people want in the new forums.

Or take it one step further, and just stop people from making the post at all (unless they email a moderator explaining why they want to necro the thread in question). That would stop people ever having to know about it, rather than filling the front page with locked threads.

@Superpig:
Isn''t that what I said? Lock any thread that hasn''t gotten a reply in 6 months.

I would love to be able to click on a username and see a list of all the other accounts that person posts from. This could be done by a combination of email and ip address tracking. I would especially like to know who a lot of anonymous posters are, as I am sure a lot of them are regular posters posting anonymously to troll.

I agree. This would be a useful feature.

That would kinda defeat the point of posting anonymous, hmm?

@APC:
Oh, I thought you meant ''add the post to the thread, bring it to the top of the board, *then* lock it.'' Hehe.

Why not just allow only one account per email address? Sure, you could sign up for lots of hotmail accounts, but they expire after a certain amount of inactive time (30 days? can''t remember). Then just auto send an email to each account every so often (3 months or so). If the email bounces back (ie, the email account doesn''t exist), close the account.
It''s not a perfect solution (because of hotmail, yahoo, et al), but it would cut down on multiple acccounts.
Maybe for this allow the user to change their name as well, but track the last few names the person had and show them under the profile. Not necessarily track ALL their names, since that could be abused, but the last dozen or something.

AlanKemp: That information is available to the moderators/staff right now... and I think it needs to stay that way. People are only supposed to have one account anyway, so if they have more than one, it''s a problem.

ze_jackal: That''s already planned. We''re actually going to go quite a bit beyond that, as far as making it difficult for people who have been banned to reregister, but I''m not going to reveal the details.
