I finally decided to buy a laptop computer, and so far am really glad I did. I''m wondering, though, how I can connect it to another computer, like a desktop system. My laptop has two USB ports, and assuming the desktop computer has a USB port, could I connect the computers that way? If so, would I be able to move files between computers through Windows Explorer? If I can''t connect using USB, how could I do it? Grant Palin

You could connect with a LAN.

There are usb adapters, but they are expensive usually and a lot slower than a simple network connection. If it''s a new laptop (as in not a newly purchased used laptop) then it probably has a network card built in. Most do these days. Then all you would need is a cross over cable to connect them. If you don''t know how to make one, they are pretty cheap at your local computer shop...

1. It is brand new.
2. It has an integrated network card.
3. What is a crossover cable? I noticed that the NIC has a socket similar to a phone cord. Is that kind of what a crossover cable is?
4. I don''t have a LAN at home with my desktop system. Do I have to have one to connect the desktop and laptop together?

1 & 2: Good

4: If you are planning on connecting more than just two computers in the future you can buy a hub or switch at your local computer store and connect your computers using that. After the hub you will have to buy the hub or switch (like this one) you will also need to buy two pieces of RJ-45 CAT5e (UTP) cable (like this). Dont be scared of the acronyms, RJ-45 is the name of the connector (slightly larger than a phone connector), CAT5e is the name of the cable, UTP means that it is for everyday use. If you go to your local computer store and describe what you are trying to do, they should be able to help you as well.

3. If you are not planning to connect more than just these two networks then you will have to buy a special type of RJ-45 CAT5e cable called a crossover cable (like this). A crossover cable is meant to connect PC to PC or hub to hub whereas the cable in 4. (straight through) is meant to connect from hub to PC.

So, what ports on the computers would the crossover cable plug into?

The crossover cable will connect the two computers by the NIC card.
