I am looking to turn up the heat on the next version of my website, and my current server is barely cutting the cheese. I want to build a new server that can handle the estimated workload, but I dont really know exactly how far I should stretch my pocketbook. I plan to run Apache/PHP/CGI/Perl/MySQL and I would like to be able to have it support AT LEAST 10 users at great speeds. Can anyone provide me server specs that would be able to support what I need? Also, what kind of connection speed up and down would be necessary to support this? Thanks in advance

Speed is almost entirely dependent on bandwidth. GameDev runs on a dual processor 300Mhz or so. IcarusIndie.com runs on a 1Ghz Duron. It used to run on a P200 just fine. Decent HD''s (was it made in the last five years?), enough memory (splurg and spend a whopping $50 on 512MB) and a decent processor (does it fit in a modern motherboard?) will do fine for a very long time. You could just buy a $500 Dell and run it off of that. Or a $199 Linblows Wal-Mart PC. Put a real version of Linux or Windows on it and you''re good to go.

What kind of bandwidth you need is dependent on what you mean by "great speed." "Great Speed" * number of simultanious users you want to support at "Great Speed" == amount of bandwidth per time frame set by "Great Speed" you need.

For just starting 256Kbit/sec is plenty. Unless you''re making money to justify it or can afford it, it''s not worth getting a higher speed than that. I spent $900 for my ISP bill last year. A 1Mbit line would be $2400 a year.

That P200 now holds a second 80GB drive which is used to back up the current server''s HD. You probably won''t need to do that for awhile either. A cheap CD-Burner will suffice to back your files up when needed.

Oh yeah, you''ll also need a router and other happy fun networking stuff.
