Windows Display Problem

I have a strange problem with the Windows display not fitting my moniter screen correctly. My game is running in 640x480 mode, and when I run it everything is way off to the left. There is about a one inch black area on the right of my screen, so I can''t see one inch of the left side of the screen. It looked fine before I reformatted my harddrive a while ago. So I tried changing my main Windows display from 1024x768 to 640x480. I had the same problem with the display being too far to the left. I wasn''t real worried about it, but when I changed back to 1024x768 mode the display did not fit the moniter screen like it did before. There is a lot of black space around the display, mostly on the bottom. Is there a Windows setting that I need to reset to enlarge the display to fit the screen? Thanks...

Is your monitor driver specified as "Plug & Play Monitor"?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, my moniter is set as Plug & Play.

I tried playing with the monitor buttons in the 3D card driver control panel to get 1024x768 mode to fit the screen, but the ''+'' buttons grayed out after I pressed them a few times, so I couldn''t make the screen any bigger. It is a little better, but I don''t think it is as big as it was before.

I''ll try the buttons on the monitor itself to see if that works, but how could the monitor settings get changed after I switched from 640x480 mode?

OMG OMG another person from Ohio! I thought I was all alone! Whereabouts are you located?

Anyways...

Do you have the latest drivers installed for your video card? In fact, what is your video card? And mess around with the monitor buttons a bit, see what you can do.

andromeda - I live near Toledo, up in the chilly Northwest.
About an hour from Cedar Point, although I won''t ride anything in there You?

In my Display Properties | Settings | Advanced | Adapter tab, there is an option to set the refresh rate. The list box has Adapter Default, Optimal, 60, 70, 75, etc. I found out that if I change the refresh rate for 640x480 mode from 120 to ''Adapter Default'', The screen looks fine. I messed with the refresh rate for 800x600 and 1024x768 modes also, and found that if I change both to ''Optimal'' they turn out alright. For some odd reason 640x480 still doesn''t look good in ''Optimal''. I believe this is the only one.

Anyway, does it hurt to change the refresh rate to ''Optimal'' or ''Adapter Default''? Do I have to worry about overloading the monitor and causing it to explode?

Cool, I''m from a little town called Stoutsville, which is about 30 minutes west of Lancaster, which, in turn, is about 45 minutes southeast of Columbus. I try to make it up to Cedar Point about once every 1 or 2 years. Millenium Force was a blast, and I hear they''re building a new coaster :D

I''ve always set my refresh rate to ''Optimal'', mainly because I like the sound of that better than ''Adapter Default''

Try doing 640x480 at 75, I think that most any monitor that was made in the past 8 years should support that. Anything lower than 75 might give you eye strain if you have sensitive eyes. Also, if you have an Nvidia card, you might look into a little tool called NVRefreshTool. Geforce cards seem to have a problem locking the refresh rate at 60 when running games (or full-screen apps, or something like that), and this nifty little program will fix that.
