I''m just wondering, how many GameDevers play chess? It seems like something that would go with programming - i.e. if you do this, that happens, etc. It''s also very logical. I myself play a few games every week at the chess club. Hehe, just today I lured a guy into moving his queen into a spot where there was only a rook separating my queen from his. Then I checked him with my rook, forcing his king to move, and allowing me to take his queen So feel free to share your favourite chess stories also! Firebird Entertainment

I suck big time at chess. I just don''t have the attention span to stare at the board for so long.

I love to play chess, but I refuse to learn anything that has a name, and I refuse to play with anyone who does. I feel it defeats the entire purpose of a thinking game to only be sitting there and trying to pull the tenth move of the FudgePacker Gambit or what have you out of your ass.

My brain has to work, it learns on its own, it develops its own way of thinking through trial and error. If I wanted to sit and regurgitate knowledge, I''d go to class. I''ll never be a master, but I don''t care, because I come out truly smarter in the end.

Yeah, I totally agree with you! I try not to learn moves, but to practice and in time get better. Today I played a guy who was boasting that he "memorized all his opening moves". Then, I started the game with some unorthodox moves, throwing him completely off his game. He was sitting there, looking confused at the board, like "Hmm..that''s an odd move." I beat him, of course.

I wonder, is it possible to beat the comptuer in chess? I tried putting a chess game on beginner''s level but the way it plays looks the same. just it takes longer for the computer to "think".

Most AI chess players you will find are limited in their difficulty by how far down the tree of moves they are allowed to think. ie, an Easy playing ocmputer might beat you soundly for a while., but have failed to see that it was moving into a dead end 10 or 12 moves down. Advanced AI will look further down the tree and find the better route.

Of couse, this is a bit of an over-simplified answer. Theres a lot of neat ways Chess AI thinks these days.

Yeah, that''s always fun... until you come up against someone who actually knows the reasons for the openings and can take advantage of the weaknesses of any random moves you throw in... My brother''s probably a better chess player than me, but because I always used to beat him, he "knows" that I''m going to win against him when we play, so I do.

I totally suck at chess. Actually, I don''t even know the full rules. My girlfriend loves chess, and she tries to trick me into learning it every now and then (which is a lost cause) Although she keeps telling me that it''s a highly interesting and intellectually challenging game, I find it excruciatingly boring... Matter of taste, I guess.

I think chess is one of the greatest games every concieved because there is no luck. Its based on the your skill and your opponents (or lack thereof). I used to be really, good but I don''t play it that much anymore.

I used to have three-ways with a couple friends of mine. Chess I mean.

We would set up a triangle of three chessboards and each of us would play a game against the two others all at the same time.

We would play badly, mind you, and usually only one game of my own would get my fuller attention, but, it was a provoking way to spend my young adult years.
It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.

Go might well be a better game... it''s certainly more resistant to analysis

I used to play chess a lot (pretty good too), but here at uni, problem is finding someone to play against :|
So I wrote a chess engine, but that''s no fun either - it''s too good

I play chess. I like it, but really suck. Recently, I''ve been playing Go, though. I''m finding that I like it better than chess.

I will have to disagree there. Mostly because when I play chess, I play in a Chaos type strategy. "If you are in a pickle, just repeat the same moves over and over again, until the opponent screws up." Strangely, that has won me all sorts of games.

I would like to check out Go one of these days
