Since programming consoles is diiferent to PC development, (I''m refering to the different API''s), and since you cannot develop for consoles without being part of a company, then what happens to entry-level console programmers? I mean, before they are employed they would have NO experience using that specific console, and so what would happen? Can you apply for a console game programming entry-level job without experience on that console? Is it possible to get the job, and then at work you learn how to use the console? This confuses me, Thanks for your time

I believe the APIs are not much different from PC APIs. I know that the XBOX uses DirectX and I think the Gamecube uses OpenGL so the adjustment time shouldn''t be too long.

Punx is right. Developing for the XBox is just like developing for the PC, you use DirectX and DevStudio. The GameCube doesn''t use OpenGL, but it has an API which is very similar to OpenGL so the transition isn''t too hard. The PS2 has an API, but my company chooses not to use it, and custom writes the graphics rendering code in MIPS assembly with a few wrapper C++ classes.

When you start to work in the game industry as programmer, you rarely develop the whole game engine !! You just have to develop some "easy" parts of the game and you can learn the basis of a console API at the same time. Programming in C(or C++) for consoles or PCs is not so far. And don't forget there are a lot of part to share between all the programmers in a team (AI, 3D, 2D, interfaces, visual effects, tools etc...).

Btw, you can learn consoles programming without working in a company. Look at this :

If you learn the math behind the API''s, you''ll be able to jump to any API, even one you''ve never seen before. It''s just a matter of learning the syntax. It''ll also make you better at using the API''s you already know.
