I know there have been threads on Iraq already, but hear me out...
In order to avoid a war, why doesn''t the US just dispatch one of its many special forces units? In short, assasinate Saddam. Such a move would rock the Iraqi government like nothing before. Without their leader and pressure from the global community, the Iraqi government would crumble within days. This would allow the US to come in and do what they''ve been saying is one of their goals all along: give the government back to the people. I''m betting the new government would look down on WMDs, as the Iraqi people have suffered under their cloud for years. This accomplishes what Bush wants, and avoids war. Everyone''s happy.
Yeah, I know it sounds conspiracy-ish, but the US Military takes pride in the fact the SEALS are the best unit of their kind in the world. I say, if that''s the case, this will be a breeze.

for some reason there is a law against assasinating other country''s leaders ... i had that same idea but my gov''t teacher told me about the law
Yeah, but weigh it out. Tens of thousands iraqi civilians dead or the US breaking yet another international law? Hmmm....

If countries deem it acceptible to assassinate each other''s leaders then it would be acceptible to assassinate the US''s leader as well (or the UK''s, or France''s, or Guatemala''s, or Indonesia''s, or even Canada''s for that matter). There is a law against it because if you are a leader in support of it then you are also saying that it''s justifiable if another leader assassinates you.
Why do we have laws against killing in general? Because we dont want somebody to kill us.

i think it is an amendment to the const. or it is a doctrine that we can not assasinate world leaders. think about it, we can get into almost any place on earth unseen or undetected. if we got a trigger happy president, he could go around and find all kind of reasons to take out world leaders. that would put the world into chaos and america into an evil nation.
I do not like to participate in threads like this but...
There is a law, like mentioned before, that was signed in the Regan era (I think) that does not allow government funded assinations by the US or by any other country.
I have heard that the Bush administration wants to get rid of this law, making it OK to assisinate Saddam, however, with the law lifted, that will make it OK for other countries to assisinate Bush.

I''t seems absurd, that when faced with war the action is not the most logical one but the one which is lawful, ie. regular attack and not the one that might preserve most lifes. Granted, i don''t really believe that you could get in a special assasination unit, Saddam has several body doubles and his "republican" guard and other special forces are numerous.
This is not a video game. It does not end. You don''t assassinate a leader and be like "Ah, done, I finished that level. Next level..." In other words, there are consequences. If the US does something as brash as assassinating him, there will be tons of terrorist strikes, and if the assassination occurs without officially declaring war, there will be attacks from non-terrorists too.
