my game is running fine. making a cute little tool to help my artist in design. the only problem is this little dialog box with DX support (REALLY easy to make with DX9 and VS6) is apparently really leaning on my processor (increasing it from its avj temp of 67c to 72c in under a minute). None of my other DX apps have had this problem, and it really isn't too big of a deal, i can just add sleeps about the place. but if you know a more elegant solution i would be appreciative. i belive there is something in the DX util library to help here too, but i dont remember what it is. thanks edit - where did the sig files run off to? oh well... i am still: Brett Lynnes cheez_keeper@hotmail.com [edited by - cheez_keeper on March 10, 2003 2:02:37 AM]

This isn''t really an answer, but instead of measuring CPU temperature, you should do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE and look in the Task Manager. That will tell you definitively how much your app is hogging the CPU.

Heavy CPU loads (DirectX or not) will definitely raise the processor temperature so you might have to improve airflow via fans/better cabling, etc.

first of all, i run 98 because i still like to play DOS games secondly, the way the code comes out of the cookie-cutter, it hogs as much time as it can get unless it is minimized. normally i allow this behavoir, becuase i LIKE my games to get as much as they can take... but i really dont need to rotate the pictures of my ships at 1470 fps (gads that is sick) in the little dialog box. basically, i dont care HOW much processor it takes up, i just want it to take less

There is nothing wrong with your cpu or graphics card heating up, if your not overclocking it. When you run a program that is going to use the cpu alot, the cpu is going to heat up, duh! If you want to find out how hot your cpu runs at, run a game that pushes the cpu at 100% for 30minutes, then use that temp as your max temp. If you over clock, make sure it doesnt go significantly above that temp.

You sound a little confused there...

personally, I don''t have a great gfx card, so one trick I do to avoid using the gpu much is to have a dirty boolean on every object. Every frame I''ll only draw the objects that need to be drawn. In 3D, I''d have a dirty boolean for the entire world, this way the world gets drawn per update only, not every frame.

As for the CPU bound case, sleeping the app is the only practical thing I can think of. That, and trying to parallelize your code with assembly!...lol, jk, but theoretically you could increase your throughput, and lower CPU usage.

Sleep(1)

its the only nice thing to do in a dialog based app
