I've been doing some game programming with opengl for a bit but I recently became interested in trying to program a renderer for non-intereactive, static, graphics. I was thinking of something similar to POV-Ray. The problem is I have found no infroamtion about it! Everything I have found is for rendering realtime graphics with OpenGL or DirectX. I was hoping that someone might have some advice or could point me in the direction of any information on this topic. [edited by - stef3d on March 10, 2003 2:18:38 AM]

how could you NOT find any info about it?
POV-Ray is a raytracer..there are 1000 tutorials on writing raytracers. if you read more about pov-ray you can find out that it does global illumination..there are a lot of tutorials on global illumination..just search google.
POV-Ray is even open source!
And if you enter someting like "non realtime rendering" in google you get thousands of results.

i really don''t want to sound unfriendly or something, i just can''t understand how you could not find out anything about this topic

my favourite link-collection for non realtime rendering is the link page of the Now3D raytracer here

Maybe I wasn''t particularly clear. I was having trouble finding anyhting about how to get started with non-realtime rendering.
I''ll check out your advice though and hopefully find something.

eh. lots of math man. look up what Burning_Ice said. try stuff like "radiosity" and "raytracing" to get an idea what's actually happening. you'll find TONS of stuff but keep in mind this is a very large and broad subject. most stuff you'll find is theory on how to do it because there's no one right way since it's all done in software.

along with that stuff i'd suggest this site. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/ you'll need to be proficient in quite a few types of mathmatics.

i'd also love to start a project like this but the scale of a project can be very large and i sure don't have the time for that let alone other stuff i'm messing with.
