Ok, I''m using directdraw7 for my new game but am wondering which color mode would be best to use. I mean, out of 8,16,24 and 32 bits. Which mode is most commonly used these days? And if I decided to use 32 bit mode, would my game run on everyones computer? Also, is there a difference in speed between color modes?? One more question, in d3d are the color modes the same? (is there 8,16,24,32 bit modes?) Thanks for your time

Why hard code your color mode? have it so that if some cards can support 32bit, let it do so, in the same sense with 16, 24, 8 whatever..you just make sure that your graphics engine supports all types of drawing regardless of what mode your in...though most cards will always support 16 and 32 bit,
If you must use just one, choose between one of those..but I would recommend developing it to use both..

Thanks Syntax,

So is there a function that checks for the valid color modes for the user''s card? (I can''t find it on the msdn)

And if there is, (i bet there is!), would I then call the appropiate functions depending on the highest available color mode?

Eg, if the user''s card supports 32 bit color, then I would call Plot_Pixel_32Bit().

Thanks for your time, this might be better off in the beginners section as I am a newb to all this
