Yeah, so last night I drove up to Houston to go see Stephen Hawking give a little talk. I must say, even though there was no math whatsoever in the talk, it was extremely interesting.
I was also quite pleased to see the number of people at the event. The entire pavilion was filled, apparently to the point where people who just showed up couldn''t get tickets to get in and hear him. People even came from all over. I had to drive about an hour and a half, since this was on the north side of Houston, and I''m way south, but the people who were standing in line behind us came all the way from Dallas just to go to this.
Oh, and in case you''re interested, he mostly talked about the concept of branes, which is a relatively new idea to explain why we only see 3 of the spatial dimensions predicted by M-theory. It was really fascinating, and reminded me once again why I am a physics major
Anyway, if you ever get a chance to go hear Dr. Hawking, I highly recommend it. Despite his clear mental superiority to basically everyone, he has quite a gift for communicating overly complex ideas in such a way that almost anyone can understand.
